5 - Excellent
“Truly a trip of a lifetime that was made by the wonderful group of people (8 of us) and the fantastic guides.
Our head guide Makeke was superb as were his assistant guides, Tony, Diglan and Samweli who looked after us exceptionally well.
We were very lucky with the weather which definitely helped as we could appreciate the beautiful and varied landscape fully.
The overall organisation of the trip was superb, the tents up when we arrived, fantastic food throughout the trip (thank you Spiderman!) and the tea and washy- washy every morning set us for the day.
Wish I could do it all over again!”

Review for another Exodus Travels tour

“A most wonderful holiday in all aspects. The wildlife was exceptional, with each encounter whether it was a pride of lions or a group of puku we were able to spend time watching their behaviour without being disturbed by other trucks. It was as if it was our own private park! The walking safaris were really exciting and we learn't many things about the wildlife from many signs. For anyone who is familiar with safaris in Kenya and Tanzania this trip offers a much more intimate experience”
The tour starts in Lima; those on the group flights arrive in the morning. There are no excursions planned until late afternoon so land only travellers can arrive anytime up until mid-afternoon (please note that hotel check-in times are usually from 3pm). Our hotel is based in the residential Miraflores District, within walking distance of the coast.

There will be a group briefing at the hotel this afternoon and then we will go the water fountain park to explore and enjoy the Fantasy Fountain Show, a musical laser light and water show.

*Accommodation: Antigua Miraflores Colonial Room (or similar)*
This morning we have a tour of colonial Lima and explore the historic downtown area. We will discover the Plaza de Armas, Basilica Cathedral and Government Palace (also known as ‘House of Pizarro’) as we take a short walk around the colonial centre. We also visit the incredible Church of San Francisco, which houses one of the oldest libraries in the Americas and sits on top of a labyrinthine network of catacombs complete with the bones of Lima's wealthy eighteenth and nineteenth-century residents.

After lunch we transfer to the airport and fly to Chiclayo where we spend the night.

*Accommodation: *Costa del Sol Wyndham* (or similar)*
This morning we transfer 2-2.5 hrs to Chappari Lodge in the dry forests of Lambayenque.  We'll arrive in time to get settled in our rooms before enjoying lunch on the open air dining area, hopefully getting our first sight of the Peruvian White-tailed deer and Sechuran foxes who are frequent visitors during mealtimes!

The order of activities at Chaparri Lodge may change depending on the weather and other factors. However, there will be a briefing upon arrival at the lodge and you will also usually go for a walk this afternoon along one of the main trails which will provide excellent chances to see the local wildlife and birds.

*Accommodation: Chaparri Lodge (or similar)*
Today is spent exploring the Chaparri Reserve in search of wildlife. Chaparri is the site of Peru’s first wildlife rescue centre designed specifically for Spectacled Bears. Seven bears that have been confiscated from illegal captivity are currently housed in large semi-wild enclosures that provide the bears a stimulating natural environment in which to live. We will visit some of these enclosures with a local guide to watch these bears in their natural habitat and learn more about these threatened animals. Chaparri also receives a selection of other rescued animals (ocelot, Andean condor, King vulture, Military macaw) which may also be seen.

*Accommodation: Chaparri Lodge (or similar)*
We have a very early start this morning, leaving the lodge around 4am, in order to transfer back to Chiclayo in time for our morning flight to Cuzco, via Lima.  We should arrive in Cuzco by lunchtime and the rest of the day is free to relax.

Set amidst hills in the altiplano, the Imperial City of the Incas, Cuzco was the geographic, cultural and political centre of a vast empire which, at its peak, stretched from present-day Quito in Ecuador to Santiago in Chile. After the Spanish conquistadores invaded the city they started building on top of the Incan structures, resulting in unique architecture, a fusion of the Incan and Spanish colonial styles.

It is recommended to take it easy upon arrival into Cuzco and to drink plenty of water to allow your body time to acclimatise to the altitude (3400m).

*Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (or similar)*
This morning we have an orientation tour of Cuzco to discover its historic buildings and winding streets, then we will visit the chocolate museum to learn all the chocolate making process starting from the cocoa tree from the Peruvian jungle. We will have the chance to make our own chocolates today, filled the way you like them, which are yours to take home.

The rest of the afternoon has been left free for exploring Cuzco, one of South America's most beautiful cities. The Plaza de Armas is a fantastic spot for people watching, and Qorikancha - Sun Temple, located in the Santo Domingo Church and monastery are worth a visit. The Mercado San Pedro is the place to try some local produce and there are many handicraft markets to shop for souvenirs such as alpaca jumpers and scarves.

*Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (or similar)*
This morning we will participate in an art workshop featuring both colonial glass ceramics and acrylic painting in cusquenian colonial guild. Learn about the process of making glasses ceramics by crafting both a traditional torito (little bull) and caballito (little horse) of Pucará. These ‘Andes Guardians’ are yours to keep and make a wonderful souvenir of your time in Cuzco!

The afternoon has been left free to enjoy Cuzco. If you fancy something more active then there is an array of optional activities available from Cuzco. These include paddle-boarding on Lake Piuray, mountain biking in the Sacred Valley between Maras and Moray, or a combination of via ferrata and zip-lining in the Sacred Valley. For some activities, a minimum number of participants is required.

*Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (or similar)***
This morning, we head out of Cuzco into the Sacred Valley. Along the way we visit an alpaca farm where we will have the chance to learn about alpacas and llamas, maybe getting the chance to feed them, and seeing the different techniques used for weaving and dyeing the wool. We will then continue on to the colourful handicraft market at Pisac, at the entrance to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After some free time to browse the stalls, we will drive to Ollantaytambo to have lunch. We should have time for an optional tour of the nearby ruins before catching our train to Aguas Calientes.

*Accommodation: Casa Andina Standard Mapi (or similar)*
In order to beat the day-trippers arriving from Cuzco and reach the ruins as early as possible, a very early start is required to queue for Machu Picchu; only government-registered buses can make the 30-minute drive up the winding road to the site entrance and during high season (May-October) queues can be hours long.

Machu Picchu is one of the architectural and engineering marvels of the ancient world and what makes it all the more dramatic is its mountain backdrop of staggering immensity. The Spaniards never found it; the Incas left no records of it, and so Machu Picchu remained a great enigma, a city lost for centuries in the jungle until it was rediscovered in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham.

New regulations for visiting Machu Picchu are now fully enforced; of the three possible visiting slots, we will purchase the morning slot from 06:00 until 12:00 (unless unavailable), you will be limited to a maximum of four hours within the site and must be accompanied by a guide. There will also be three set routes to follow around Machu Picchu; Exodus selects the most comprehensive route.

We catch an afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo (1hr 30 mins) and continue by private bus to Cuzco (2hrs 30 mins).

*Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (or similar)*
Today has been left free to relax and enjoy the many attractions of Cuzco. Again, your leader can help to arrange optional excursions and activities for you - please see the Optional Activities section of the Trip Notes for more details.

*Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel* *(or similar)*
Our adventure ends this morning after breakfast. Those who have booked a flight inclusive package from London will be transferred to the airport in the afternoon for the overnight international flight back to London via Bogota.
