Kilimanjaro Tour Reviews

An unforgettable time!
5 - Excellent
  • Sarah Moore
“We had an unforgettable experience last week on this tour. We were a group of 4 women with limited to some hiking experience. Anna and Stasia from the tour company were very responsive leading up to our booking. They were very easy and transparent regarding all the booking details. During the trip, our guides Baraka and Gerald were highly professional throughout our trek. They made sure that we were as comfortable as possible. This included all the small things, such as making sure we got enough lights for dinner and bringing more if we needed, as well as the big things, such as making sure that we summited! Baraka and Gerald were highly experienced as guides, and made sure to adjust their walking speeds to the individual needs of our group. They were also very personable, friendly and extremely approachable if we ever had questions (and we had many!). In addition, the rest of the crew (there were 20 people in total), that helped us were all highly attentive and very competent- we could not have done this without them. The food from our chef Justin was delicious - weve never had soup as creamy and eggs cooked the way he makes them- it stood out as unparalleled hiking food! Our server Benson told us really funny stories about his many trips in the mountains while he prepared dinner. The rest of the crew who worked behind the scenes tirelessly made everything seamless! We couldnt have asked for more. Some tips in addition to the other ones you may find online:1. Bring Vaseline - it gets really dry in the mountains so that would really help.2. It also gets very dusty in the mountain, so if you have dust allergies, you might need some medication. Even if you are not allergic to dust, it may be good to bring a bandana or something equivalent to keep off the dust.3. Rent the portable toilet!!! It is much better than the public restrooms, and relatively clean. Much more convenient if you need to go at night.4. Bring an extra roll of toilet paper- you wont need it for the toile if you rent the portable toilet, but it is useful if your nose runs because it gets cold.5. Bring extra hand warmers if you can. In addition to using them on Summit Day, some mornings are also cold. The crew does give you heated rubber bottles for warmth as well- so this is just for extra comfort.6. Bring mouthwash! Some nights are somewhat cold, so you may choose to mouthwash rather than do the full floss/brush. Makes you feel cleaner for sure. Same goes for disposable baby wipes in addition to a camping towel (quick dry so you dont have to use a wet one the next day!)7. Bring extra snacks if you can- the crew never will ask you for food, but we think they really appreciate it when you share. Same goes for anything else you think you can spare. Sharing is caring!8. Ask questions! We learned quite a bit about the mountains and the lives of our entire crew when we did- it was very rewarding learning more about the local culture and language.”
Mt Kilimanjaro Lemosho 7 Day and 3 day Safari

“Where do I start! this tour operator is just what you need to get the most out of Tanzania. We worked with Naick who made sure our climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and experience a Safari was flawless. The operator provided the best hotel, guides, vehicles, cooks, porters; all at an affordable price. The organization for the trip was easy as Naick provided us with a detailed confirmation and itinerary. All of our travel questions were answered promptly and we were picked up from the airport right on time. This company goes above and beyond the rest. Our Mt. Kilimanjaro guides Bakari and Matthew were the best we could hope for. During the toughest weather and terrain they made sure we had everything we needed. They pushed us and took care of us. Our gear, provided by the tour operator, was top-notch and allowed us to safely summit. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable, both with the Mt. Kilimanjaro climb as well as the safari with our guide Chris. We were able to see almost every animal the Serengeti has, and our guide made sure we had the best views. We are extremely grateful to our operator, Naick, Bakari, Matthew, Chris, the porters, chefs, drivers and more. - Brandon and Dylan (Brothers from Argentina!)”

“Thank you for making our Kilimanjaro climb a success. We were well taken care of, and everything was well thought out and planned. Our guides, Richard, Nelson, and Eric, were wonderful. Would not be possible without such extraordinary guides who even provided motivation and encouragement when needed. Could not be more grateful for a wonderful team! Highly recommended.”

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro - Overview

Standing 5,895 meters tall, Mt Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free-standing mountain. The first recorded ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro was in 1889 by the two climbers Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller.

There are primarily four popular routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro:

  1. Marangu Route - also known as the Coca Cola route because of its availability of cokes in the tea huts
  2. Machame Route - the second most popular route on the mountain after the Marangu Route
  3. Lemosho Route - known for its beauty and relatively few people
  4. Rongai Route - the only route that starts from the Northern side of the mountain, known for giving good opportunitues to spot wildlife during the first couple of days on the climb

The Marangu Route should be the easiest of the above four routes. Despite hereof the success rate is often higher on the Machame Route, probably because people taking that route are more prepared.

Other less popular routes available for climbing Kilimanjaro are:

  1. The Northern Circuit Route
  2. The Umbwe Route

Best Months to Climb Kilimanjaro

Jan to Feb and July to October are some of the best months to climb Kilimanjaro. The worst months are April, May and November due to a high level of precipitation. That said, due to the generally friendly climate it is indeed possible to climb Kilimanjaro all year round.

Safety While Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is not dangerous, however, precautions certainly have to be taken as otherwise it may become dangerous. Please always follow the below recommendations when climbing Kilimanjaro:

  • We always recommend climbing the mountain in 7 days, as proper acclimatization is needed. Even if having chosen a 7 days climb you may still, for some reason, acquire altitude sickness. Therefore, please do familiaries yourself with how to treat and prevent altitude illness prior to commencing the climb.
  • Assess your climbing guide and porters before taking off. They have to appear professional and friendly and also posses the required knowledge and Kilimanjaro climbing experience.
  • There are a lot of fraud climbing companies present in Tanzania who do not have the required climbing permits and licenses. Please therefore only book with a company that have all the required authoritizations (in this regard it ought to be mentioned that Bookmundi only works with licensed companies that have all the necessary permits).
