Mera Peak Climbing is an exhilarating adventure in Nepal that gives us an opportunity to reach the summit of Mera Peak located more than 6400m above sea level. Actually it is the highest climbing peak in Nepal with 6476m.

Enjoy excellent views of high Himalayas that include Everest, Chooyu, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and other neighboring peaks during our Mera Peak adventure that comprises a short mountain flight to Lukla, followed by trekking through Sherpa inhabited villages.

Following the trekking and hiking route, we make our way off the beaten path along Hinku Honku valley. We trek up to Mera Peak base camp, summit the peak and return with an experience of lifetime.

Mera Peak doesn’t require technical peak climbing experience as the snow slopes do not exceed more than 30 degrees. There will be fixed ropes and you are safeguarded by fixed lines. You will be following the climbing Sherpa’s instructions and footsteps during the summit day.

Accommodation is in teahouses during the trek until we reach Khare where we spend two nights in tented camps with the climbing crew (porters, cook, guide, and leader).

We return back to Lukla and board a scenic flight to Kathmandu that ends our exciting Mera Peak climbing adventure.
Day 1 Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Chutanga 3 -4 hours Guest house

Wake up at dawn and be ready for the adventure. We will usher you to domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early morning flight. After an adventurous 40 minute flight above an array of beautiful green and white mountains, we arrive at the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft), an entry town from where your trek begins.

This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world concluding in a dramatic landing site on a hillside surrounded by high mountains peaks. In Lukla, we meet our additional crew members and do some packing and arrangements.

We start our trek through the prosperous village of Lukla, walk up to Chutang and spend night there in a teahouse. Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 2 Acclimatization at Chutanga- take acclimatization hike 6-7 hours Guest house

Today is our first acclimatization day. To let time for our body to adapt with the altitude we spend two nights at Chutanga. Tomorrow we will cross the big pass Zatra-la, so we hike today to nearby hills for acclimatization.

Overnight in a local teahouse. Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 3 Chutang to Thuli Kharka (4300m/14104ft) via Zatra La Guest house

We start after breakfast on 1300m ascent to the Zatra then a short traverse to Zatra La pass proper. This is generally a hard walk even if the conditions are good (no snow). Zatra La can get considerable amount of snow and you might need to use crampons and ice axes as well as install fixed ropes to safeguard porters.

Once at the pass it is only a short steep descent to Thuli Kharka (big pasture) where there are several basic lodges.

Overnight in a local teahouse.

Walking time 6-7 hrs, Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 4 Thuli Kharka to Kothe (4182m/13716 ft) Guest house

The morning gives us great views of the pass we left behind. We traverse three ridges until we find ourselves high above the Hinku river. With a bit of luck you can then see the impressive south face of Mera Peak.

From here a long steep descent on a narrow trail drops steeply through the rhododendrons and forests of moss-covered pines to the edge of the huge scar left by the devastating bust of a natural dam above Tagnag in 1998. From there the trail climbs gradually, following the river and crossing a broad ridge of mixed forest. You reach a sandy boulder choked area known as Khote.

Walking time 6-7 hrs, Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 5 Kothe to Thangnag (4356m/14288ft) Guest house

Our trail continues alongside the riverbed through thick rhododendron forest. Care has to be taken as there are many loose boulders on this section. We continue on the east bank of the Hinku Drangka.

Just above the confluence of the Hinku and Sanu Drangka rivers the valley widens providing excellent views of Kusum Kangguru (6369m) and Peak 43 (6769m), at the head of the valley. The trail continues up the left bank to Tangnag (4366m), a summer settlement that has grown into a small hamlet of teashops and a lodge.

Overnight in local teahouse.

Walking time 5-6 hrs, Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 6 Thagnag to Khare (5,000m/16,400ft) Guest house

Today we head towards Khare. We follow the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier to Dig Kharka, which offers spectacular views of Charpate Himal. The trail climbs through moraines and to the snout of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers and then climbs more steeply to your camping spot at Khare.

The camping experience at Khare is something that you would cherish throughout your life. It is a pleasure to view beautiful north face of Mera Peak from Khare.

Overnight in local teahouse.

Walking time 3-4 hrs, Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 7 Acclimatization at Khare- Ice climbing practice Camping

Today after breakfast, you will prepare your gear for ice climbing just above Khare and need to walk couple of hours from where you can see good views of the Mera La and the route up the mountain.

You will get a few hours for practicing ice climbing. Your leader will teach you and instruct you about using the climbing gear and climbing techniques. After a few hours of practice in the glacier, you stroll back to camp, make final preparations, and pack your equipment and mountain bags.

Overnight rest at the camp in Khare.

Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 8 Khare to Mera Peak Base Camp (5,350m/17,552ft) Camping

After a short trek in slow speed to allow for acclimatization, you will make your way to Mera Base Camp. First climbing to the crest of the moraine above Khare and then up a steep slope of snow to reach a boulder strewn bowl below the lower tongue of the Mera Glacier.

Reaching the pass Mera La (5,415m/17,766ft) allows us to see spectacular views; we then descend 100m (328ft) towards the Hongu side and set up base camp in the moraine below the ice.

Overnight in Mera Base Camp.

Walking time 3-4 hrs. Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 9 Climb to Mera High camp (5,750m/18,865ft) Camping

Making your way to Mera High Camp can be difficult if it has recently snowed, as there are a number of crevasses here. You make your way to the top of the rock band, which is marked by a large cairn.

You set up a high camp and from here the views are outstanding, with Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu and more piercing the skyline.

This evening we overnight in Mera High Camp.

Walking time 4-5 hrs. Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 10 Summit day and descend to Khare Camping

Today is the day we reach to our target, the summit of Mera peak. We wake up at 2 am and after breakfast, the group will put on crampons and rope-up before setting out for the summit. From the high camp a well acclimatized party will take 3 – 4 hours to get to the central summit of Mera peak.

If time and conditions permit we may opt to make the traverse to the slightly higher north summit. The decision as to whether we attempt the north summit will be taken by the trip leader as per the conditions. From the summit we enjoy the magnificent views of Mt. Everest (8,848m/29,029ft), Cho-Oyu (8,201m/26,906ft), Lhotse (8,516m/27,940ft), Makalu (8,463m/27,766ft), Kangchenjunga (8,586m/28,169ft), Nuptse (7,855m/25,770ft), Lobuche East (6,145m/20,160ft), Chamlang (7,319m/24,013ft). We then retrace our steps back to camp and celebrate our successful summit. A long but the most satisfying day!

Walking time 8-9 hrs. Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 11 A contingency day

This day we use to keep as a spare day, set aside in case we have to postpone the attempt on the peak because of bad weather or because some of us have not acclimatized well enough to make the ascent.

If we are successful in making the summit on day 14, we use this day for another Ice climbing day or spent one more night at village of Lukla.

Included Meals: B, L, D

Day 12 Khare to Kothe Guest house

After a great success of Mera peak climbing we descend through Hinku valley to Kothe for our overnight stop in a local teahouse. We celebrate our successful trip and enjoy the evening with local food and drinks and relax at Kothe.
