The South Africa's Kruger & Cape Town: Hike, Bike & Kayak tour starts in Johannesburg and ends in Cape Town. The South Africa's Kruger & Cape Town: Hike, Bike & Kayak is an Active And Outdoor tour that takes 11 days taking you from Johannesburg to Cape Town and through other destinations in Africa.

Hike, bike and kayak your way through South Africa, starting in Johannesburg and finishing in beautiful Cape Town. On the way you'll drive and walk through Kruger National Park in search of its famous inhabitants, explore the waters and beaches of Cape Town by kayak, climb Table Mountain for spectacular views and cycle up and down the Cape Peninsula and Stellenbosch's wineries.

Sawubona! Welcome to Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city. You'll meet your fellow travellers at a 6 pm welcome meeting, but there are no other activities planned before then so feel free arrive early and explore the city. The Apartheid Museum is an essential visit to learn about South Africa's 20th-century history, then why not spend some time in one of Jo'burg's hip neighbourhoods like Braamfontein or Newtown. After tonight's meeting your leader will suggest a traditional steakhouse for dinner so you can get to know your fellow group members.

Optional Activities
  • Johannesburg - Jozi by Foot Urban Adventure - USD 41
  • Johannesburg - Cycle Soweto Urban Adventure - USD 95
Strap in for what may be a long travel day but is also the start of a truly great adventure. Drive from Jo'burg to the Greater Kruger National Park region (approx. 8 hours), arriving at camp in time for a late lunch. After some time to settle in, head off on a late afternoon/evening Big Five game drive in open 4x4 vehicles in a private game reserve. Sundowner drinks are enjoyed at one of the waterholes before continuing our game drive into the night. You'll return to camp for a traditional South African meal eaten around the fire.

Located in the greater Kruger, your camp is wonderfully intimate, with limited camping tents. Tents include stretcher beds, mattresses, sleeping bags and linen. The camp is situated on the grounds of a lodge that offers a comfortable lounge, swimming pool and WiFi.
Accommodation
  • Camping (with facilities)
The group is up early today to venture into the Kruger National Park itself, one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa and home to over 500 species of bird, 100 species of reptile and a whole bunch of mammals including the Big Five: rhino, leopard, lion, elephant and buffalo. It all kicks off as soon as you enter the park as the group heads into prime game viewing areas, hopefully catching the animals at their most active before the heat of the day kicks in. A late breakfast will be eaten at a picnic spot inside the park, while lunch will be at your own expense at a group of restaurants within the park. The rest of the day will be spent viewing game, bird watching and kicking back with the animals at all the waterholes en route. Return to camp in the late afternoon for an evening spent relaxing and chatting with your leader and fellow travellers about just how ridiculously good today was.

Rise early and take the optional walking safari with a qualified field guide within the private game reserve. Keep your nose to the ground and learn to use animal tracks to search for elephant and lion as well as rhino, which the area is known for monitoring and keeping safe. Just remember to lift your eyes every now and then or you'll miss it all. Return to Jo'burg for a free evening – your leader can help with suggestions on where to eat and drink.

This morning you'll transfer to the station for a scheduled departure at 12.30 pm. Your destination is Cape Town and your transport the Shosholoza Myel train, which will take approximately 26 hours. You'll travel in a tourist class sleeper cabin, a 4-berth compartment that converts to bunk beds at night. This is a great opportunity to relax, read and play cards on an otherwise active adventure. Watch the scenery change as you pass through arid Karoo, traverse the Hex River Pass and pass through the beautiful winelands shadowed by towering mountains just outside of Cape Town.
Accommodation
  • 4-berth train compartment
Arrive in Cape Town, South Africa's lively and beautiful port city sitting under the watchful eye of Table Mountain. The evening is free once you've checked into your private room at a hostel, and your leader will be on hand to suggest some ways to spend the time. Perhaps take a short walk to the famous Long and Bree streets for dinner and a locally brewed beer.

This morning you'll tackle the hike up Table Mountain, an essential Cape Town experience. You'll be rewarded for your glute-busting efforts with panoramas over Cape Town and the Atlantic, and with spectacular views of Lion's Head, Signal Hill and the City Bowl. Save your legs by taking a cable car for the return journey to the city and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at your leisure. There are plenty of optional activties available here, like jumping on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus to explore the city further, visiting the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront or brushing up on your history by catching a ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned before the fall of Apartheid. In the evening, the group will head to Bo Kaap, formerly known as the Malay Quarter, for a cooking class (and dinner, naturally).

Begin the day with a morning kayak to visit the penguins of Boulders Beach. Paddle out past the leviathans resting in the civilian and naval harbours and if you're lucky, you may well encounter a number of Cape fur seals along the way. On your return, the group will take a short drive to Stellenbosch for a free afternoon. This is a buzzing university town known for its lovely architecture, tree-lined streets and lively bar and restaurant scene. And did we mention it's also a world-famous wine region? Perhaps take a walk through town after checking into the hotel, or stop into one of the cellar doors for a wine tasting.
Accommodation
  • Guesthouse
It's a stellar morning in Stellenbosch as you jump on a mountain bike for a cycling tour of the region's vineyards. This is arguably South Afria's most famous wine region and is known for its cabernet and Bordeaux-style blends, while also being the birthplace of pinotage – the love child of pinot noir and cinsault. You'll visit three estates over the course of the morning and cover a distance of approximately 10 kilometres. Please remember that it gets hot in the summer and the combination of cycling, sunshine and wine can easily lead to dehydration. Be sure to carry sunscreen, water and a hat to wear when you're not modelling a very stylish helmet. Enoy a free afternoon on your return, either taking it easy, furthering your wine exploration or tucking into a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants.

The focus today is on experiencing Cape Peninsula's natural beauty as you leave the winelands behind (approx. 55 km or one hour). The option is there to jump on a bicycle and visit the historic navy suburb of Simon's Town, pass the penguins at Boulders Beach, cycle the East and West coasts and meander through the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Your efforts will be rewarded with a platter lunch at the picturesque Cape Point Vineyards, which have commanding views over the Atlantic Oceann. The ride is a bit more challenging than yesterday's – it's approximately 40 km in total – but you'll be riding road bikes on sealed roads.

Alternatively for those who prefer a more leisurely cycle there is the 3 hour (approximately 12km) Beer & Bikes tour. The tour will introduce you to some of the best brews Cape Town has to offer while cycling through the vibrant CBD, stopping to visit a pub, a traditional brewery and beer garden along the way.

After the ride is complete, return to Cape Town and perhaps celebrate this adventure with a farewell dinner down at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a popular working harbour with restaurants, bars and cinemas.

  • Joining point instructions

We recommend that if this is your first time to Johannesburg or if you are travelling alone, that you pre book an arrival transfer through. This can be done through your bookings consultant once you provide your flight details. There are two airports in Johannesburg; Lanseria and OR Tambo International. If you are taking a domestic flight to Johannesburg, please make sure to check your arrival airport and advise your booking agent.

If you have pre-booked a transfer, your driver will be waiting for you at the Information Counter in your respective arrival terminal (domestic/international). There are often large crowds here so please look carefully for your transfer representative who will be holding a card with your name on it. Please do not agree to travel with individuals that claim to be your driver and do not represent “Page Corporate Transfer Services”.

If you are unable to find your driver you can call +27 84 400 8896 at any time of the day or call the Page Corporate Transfer Services Office +27 11 452 6970 .If your flight has been delayed we recommend to contact our local emergency number to inform them of your arrival on +27 82 822 9407. If your cell phone is not on roaming you may prefer to purchase a pre-paid sim card at the OR Tambo Arrivals Hall. Some reliable providers in South Africa are MTN, Vodacom and Cell-C. The driver will wait for two hours after your scheduled arrival time. If you are delayed beyond one hour after your scheduled arrival time and you have not been able to inform the transfer provider, please make your own way to the hotel. If your driver does not have your transfer on record, please present a voucher that proves your transfer booking. Our airport representative will make arrangements accordingly.

Metered official Airport Taxis are also available. The cost to the hotel will be approximately ZAR400-650 which is payable to the driver. The taxi rank is located just outside the arrivals area. Please note that the journey can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on time of day and traffic.

If you'd prefer to make your own way from the Airport to our hotel in Johannesburg, the Gautrain is a fast and inexpensive option. Please note that the train only operates between 05:30am and 20:30pm daily. The train journey from O.R Tambo International Airport to Sandton takes 15 minutes. From Sandton train station you will need to catch another train just one stop to Rosebank Station. A one-way fare costs approximately 162.00ZAR. During Peak hours the trains depart every 12minutes (05:30-08:30 & 16:00-19:00).

  • Group leader

On this trip you will be accompanied by 2 crew members - Group Leader, and Driver

  • Is this trip right for you

As an active trip a certain level of fitness is required to enjoy this trip.

In the Greater Kruger region we camp in tents with stretcher beds, mattresses, sleeping bags and linen provided. However, if you would prefer a little extra comfort, Permanent Safari Tents are available at an additional cost.

Our Kruger camp is located within the Greater Kruger Park ecosystem and is about a 50 minute drive to Kruger National Park’s Orpen Gate. On this itinerary you will have Game Drives in both the Kruger National Park and neighbouring Private Game Reserves.

This itinerary starts in Johannesburg and includes 2 long travel days to and from Greater Kruger.

  • Health

All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to cope with our style of travel. Please note that if, in the opinion of our group leader or local guide, any traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations and anti-malarial requirements before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements (including a spare pair of glasses) as they may not easily be obtained at the locations on this trip.

    YELLOW FEVER:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also quite common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate on your arrival back home.

It is your responsibility to check with your doctor well in advance of leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

    DRINKING WATER:
As a rule we recommend you don't drink tap water, even in hotels, as it may contain much higher levels of different minerals than the water you are used to at home. For local people this is not a problem as their bodies are used to this and can cope, but for visitors drinking the tap water can result in illness. Generally this isn't serious, an upset stomach being the only symptom, but it's enough to spoil a day or two of your holiday. Many hotels and lodges provide safe drinking water, while bottled water is another alternative. Water consumption should be about two litres a day. Rehydration salts, motion sickness tablets, and diarrhoea blockers are available from many pharmacies.

  • Food and dietary requirements

Your group leader will endeavour to cater for specific dietary requirements where possible, and vegetarianism and gluten intolerance will be catered for in most instances, however your diet may be limited more than you are used to. Please notify your group leader of any dietary requirements in your group meeting at the start of the trip.

Meals will often be limited to what is on offer at the lodge we stay at due to the remoteness of the area.

  • Money matters

When it comes to money matters on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities, tipping and laundry. It’s always better to bring a little more than you think you’ll need.

Also make sure you’ve read your trip details thoroughly so you know what’s included in the trip price and what isn’t. This should make budgeting a little easier. You’ll find this info in the Inclusions section of your Essential Trip Information (that’s this document).
Please note: all recommendations for additional costs, tipping etc. are in USD. You will need to convert these into the relevant local currency.

    MEALS NOT INCLUDED
For lunches not included, a budget of USD10 to USD15 per meal will be more than sufficient.
For dinners not included, your leader will normally recommend options and restaurants where you can safely try the local specialties of the region. Expect meals to cost between USD12 to USD25 for a main.

These are indicative prices only. If you are in a tight budget or are happy to try local food, you can eat cheaper than this.
If you want to try just the finest food at the finest restaurants, then you can expect meals to cost as much as in western countries.

    TIPPING
Gratuities aren’t compulsory on your trip, but they can make a big difference to locals employed in the tourism industry. If you are happy with the services provided, a tip is an appropriate way to thank them. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid destinations.

Usually the equivalent of around USD7 to USD10 per person, per day to cover tips is fine.

    TIPPING KITTY
Over the years we have found that many of our travellers find the need for tipping to be both tiresome and embarrassing, especially if they don't have the correct small change. To overcome this, your leader might raise the idea of a group tipping kitty. At your group meeting, your tour leader may discuss the idea of running this kitty, whereby everybody contributes an equal amount and then your tour leader pays the tips as you go. The leader will keep a running record of all monies spent (except restaurant tips). The record can be checked at any time and any money remaining at the end of the tour returned to group members. This kitty does not include tips for your leader and crew.

    TIPPING GUIDE
To give you a bit of guidance, we’ve put together the following tipping notes. These are just suggestions, based on feedback from past travellers and our staff on the ground.
    - Your crew (including leaders, drivers and cooks where applicable) – The amount is entirely a personal preference; however as a guideline USD3 to USD4 per staff member, per day can be used. Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
    - Local guides – Throughout your trip you may at times have a local guide in addition to your leader. We suggest USD2 to USD3 per person, per day for local guides.
    - Basic restaurants – When checking the bill, if there’s an addition of 10% service charge, there’s no requirement for tipping. Otherwise, 10% of the total bill amount is appropriate.

    EMERGENCY FUNDS
We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you bring an extra USD500 for emergencies (e.g. natural disasters or civil unrest). Sometimes these things necessitate last minute changes to our itineraries, and we can’t guarantee there won’t be some extra costs involved.

CREDIT CARDS, ATMS AND MONEY EXCHANGE:
Credit cards are generally accepted in tourist shops and some restaurants across Africa. Visa and Mastercard are generally preferred over American Express, Diners, etc. Smaller venues take cash only. Foreign currency is easily changed at exchange bureaus and they generally offer the best rates.

With ATMs being increasingly available in the many major towns and cities and even some campsites, credit or debit cards are a convenient way to access money. Be aware that your withdrawing limit may vary from country to country (regardless of your withdrawing limit in your home country) and it can be as low as the equivalent to USD100 per day. Throughout Africa, cards with the Visa logo are most readily recognised, although MasterCard is also accepted in most places. A charge is made for each international transaction - please check with your bank how much this fee will be. Check with your bank before leaving home that your card can be used as a debit card in Africa. You may also want to notify your bank that you are visiting Africa as it's not unknown for banks to freeze cards which show sudden transactions in other countries. If you're on a multi-country tour, your tour leader will be able to give you an approximate idea of how much money you may need for your stay in each country.

PLEASE NOTE: Many businesses and banks in Africa, especially East Africa, do not accept US dollar notes older than 2006. If you are bringing USD, we strongly recommend large bills in good condition, 2006 series onwards only. Any old or damaged notes may not be accepted.

  • Climate and seasonal

Yes it is Africa, however the winter months can be very cold. Please bring warm winter clothing such as wool pullover and a jacket. Also consider thermals, gloves and a woolly hat.

  • A couple of rules

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Intrepid travellers. Intrepid's philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter and in particular, the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of sexual harassment at Intrepid, either between passengers or involving our leaders or local operators. Sexual relationships (consensual or otherwise) between a leader and a passenger are unacceptable. If you ever feel another person is behaving inappropriately please inform us immediately by contacting the emergency contact number detailed in these trip notes.

  • Accommodation notes

    CAPE TOWN WATER SHORTAGE
Recently in Cape Town there have been water shortages due to a severe drought in this area. The municipality of Cape Town has reduced the daily water quota to 50 litres, therefore while limited, there is still adequate water for travellers essential daily needs such as washing, using the toilet, and other daily hygiene. Residents and travellers need to treat this scarce resource with the utmost respect. Mandated guidelines suggest a shower of no longer than 2 minutes, while the use of baths is entirely discouraged. Some swimming pools at hotels have been converted to salt (ocean) water, while restaurants have amended menus by removing dish types that require a lot of water to prepare. Please take the shortage into consideration when planning laundry days within your itinerary and we encourage you to follow the water usage instructions of our local suppliers in Cape Town.

If you require a Sleep Apnea Machine to sleep please ensure that it is battery operated. Lodges and Permanent Tented Camps are often powered by generators which are turned off during the night.

Accommodation within Greater Kruger is in two-person canvas dome tents with stretcher beds, camping mattresses, sleeping bags, sheets and pillows supplied. The camp is on the grounds of a lodge and has all facilities required. There may be the option to upgarde to permanent safari tents. Rooms start from approximately USD120 per room per night for a twin room, are subject to availability and cannot be pre-booked.

  • Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

    SINGLE TRAVELLERS:
Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and don't involve a compulsory single supplement. Single travellers share with people of the same gender in accommodation ranging from twin to multishare. Some of our itineraries have accommodation booked on a mixed gender share basis and where applicable this will be specified in our Trip Notes. On a selection of our trips, you have the option to pay a single supplement to ensure that you have your own accommodation (where available). Please note that this only applies to accommodation during the tour - pre-trip and post-trip accommodation will be booked on a single room basis.

  • Itinerary disclaimer

ROAD CONDITIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURE IN AFRICA:
Roads in Africa are often in very poor condition, which makes it hard on our vehicles. Our vehicles are serviced regularly and are generally in good condition, but breakdowns can and do happen. Sometimes the going on this trip is quite tough, the distances covered fairly large and some of the roads and tracks are not exactly smooth or free from dust, but the rewards are exceptional. The travelling times indicated in our Essential Trip Information is just a rough guide and is dependent on various factors that may be outside our control, such as road conditions, weather and time spent at borders.

    DRIVE TIMES:
The travel times listed in the day to day itinerary are a guide only. Please be aware that delays may occur and please be patient - it's all part of the experience afterall! Additionally, the travel times do not include time spent on game drives as these can vary with each departure.

    OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travellers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn't an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance only, and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. When it's recommended that travellers pre-book these activities, look for a note in the Special Information section of the day-to-day itinerary. For most, they can either be organised independently on the day, or let your leader know you are interested and they can assist.

Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. Although it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. How our Travel Expert Service Works
  • 1 We connect you with a hand-picked and qualified travel expert who can match your trip requirements. The advantage of working directly through a travel expert is that you get the best and unfiltered advice from the very beginning.
  • 2 The travel expert will help you with creating and customising a trip for you. If you have any questions or concerns relating to the trip, the travel expert will also be able to help you with those.
  • 3 When you feel that your trip is exactly per your wish, you'll be able to book the entire trip here on Bookmundi.
The Advantages of Bookmundi
  • Selected Local Travel Experts All our local travel experts have been chosen based on rigorous selection criteria. In fact, we reject 98 out of 100 local travel agencies, and thereby giving you access to the top 1-2% local travel experts.
  • Secure Online Payment and Financial Guarantee Each and every trip is required to go through Bookmundi's secure payment platform, powered by Stripe and supported by SSL. All payments are therefore carried out in secure manners. We are furthermore member of the Danish Travel Fund which gives you a 100% financial guarantee for any money you pay on Bookmundi, even if we went bankrupt (which we we will not!).
  • Trip Replacement or 100% Reimbursement Bookmundi has hand-picked your local travel expert. Our role, as your trusted third party, is therefore to make sure that your entire experience runs as seamless and secure as possible. We guarantee to you that in the unlikely event where a local travel expert cancels your trip after your deposit or full payment has been made, we commit to replacing these services with another equally qualified agency so that your trip can go ahead as planned, or failing to replace it, we will give you a 100% reimbursement.
