Great mix of history and hiking

“Great walking in a dramatic and historic landscape which isn't as well known as it deserves to be. This trip has a variety of different walks with lots of different aspects to keep your interest. The scenery is dramatic - lots of crags and gorges with views of the snow topped mountains, but there is also the history and culture of the area. The villages are scenic but not twee, this is a working agricultural landscape after all, and the terraces and ancient moorish irrigation system give the landscape a distinctive character.”

“A lovely week of walking in Las Alpujarras through pretty white villages, woodland trails, hillsides covered with wild lavender and thyme. As it was in early October there was also the added bonus of picking walnuts, almonds and ripe figs from the trees. The group was lovely and each day ended with a well earned beer in a local bar. We were made to feel very welcome in the hotel - the food was always excellent and the staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. And last but not least Sami the dog made an excellent member of the walking group.”

“An unspoilt area of Spain with interesting walks and scenery. It was good to have walks starting from the hotel and / or a short transfer to a local village. At the end of the week to have a day and overnight stay in Granada worked well especially as the hotel was very central to the old part of the city. The hotel in Berchules was lovely. The staff very welcoming and accommodating. The food was excellent as was the service.”

Granada — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • Alhambra, the most famous landmark of Granada, is an awe-inspiring 13th Century fortress perched on top of a hill east of the city center. Throughout the history, this vast complex served as a royal court of both Muslim and Spanish kings.
  • On a hill facing the Alhambra, you will find Albaicín, Granada’s old Muslim quarter. With its beautiful white-washed façades, a myriad of charming shops and spectacular views of the city, this neighborhood the ideal place to soak up city’s rustic atmosphere.
  • Cathedral Granada is a majestic construction that dates back to 16th century. It is known for its opulent Renaissance interior and a magnificent, 30-meters high dome.
  • Nestled in the heart of the city, the Royal Chapel houses the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. It is a stunning architectural fusion of Gothic and Renaissance styles.

Travel Tips

  • The Sierra Nevada mountains lie to the south of the city and are an ideal getaway destination for skiing (in the winter) or hiking and mountain biking, when the temperatures are warmer.
  • Sacromonte, Granada’s Roma neighborhood, is known for its bohemian, artistic character. If you are looking to catch a spontaneous flamenco performance in the middle of the street, this lively district is your best bet.
  • If you are visiting Granada during scorching summer months and find yourself in dire need of refreshment, make sure to try tinto de verano, a mixture of red wine and gaseosa, a mild-flavored lemonade.
