Trekking permits

Posted by in Treks in Nepal 2014-01-23 00:21:39

My wife and I are arrive in Kathmandu on the 9th of april, late in the afternoon, and we are leaving back home on the 30th of april - late at night. In the meantime (...) we would like walk from Jiri (160 km east of Kathmandu) to Everest Base Camp, and fly back from Lukla or Syangboche (Namche Bazar) to Kathmandu. So, this is a tight time schedule, that's why we would like to arrange things ahead as much as possible. So here are my questions:
- Is the area between Jiri and Lukla save again to walk? I read something on Maoist control in the past.
- Can I book a bus or a plane from Kathmandu to Jiri in advance from abroad?
- Do I need trekking permits for this trip? If so, can I arrange them from abroad?
- Any further suggestions are always welcome of course!
Thanks.

    Hello Jan,

Thank you for posting on trekbooking.com forum. Please find requested information below.

    - Is the area between Jiri and Lukla save again to walk? I read something on Maoist control in the past.
-> Maoist problem has been solved long ago. So, this area is definitely safe to trek.

    - Can I book a bus or a plane from Kathmandu to Jiri in advance from abroad?
-> Yes, you can. You can find trekkingbooking.com recommended list at http://trekbooking.com/blog/best-trekking-agencies-nepal/. Contact them and see if they are willing to accommodate your requirement.

    - Do I need trekking permits for this trip? If so, can I arrange them from abroad?
-> Yes, you will need trekking permits to trek in Everest area. You will need two type of permits - Sagarmatha National park entry fee and TIMS card. As mentioned above, again, you should contact one of the agency and request if they can help you.

Should you require further information, please feel free to post here.

    Hi Jan,

Just adding to Mosaic Adventure's otherwise good answer.

Nowadays the bus actually goes all the way to Shivalaya, from where you can start the trekking (instead of e.g. Jiri). Provided that you take a bus to Shivalaya/Jiri I believe that bus tickets should be easily available, even with very short notice. The challenge more lies with the flight ticket back from Lukla as Everest Base Camp will be rather busy during April. It would therefore be recommendable to book the flight tickets from Lukla to Kathmandu in advance (the sooner the better, to be sure that tickets are available).

As Mosaic Adventure mentions, a trekking agency should be able to arrange the required transportation and permits. In fact, I am sure that Madhav, who have written Mosaic Adventure's post below can readily assist with that, if required.

As for the time schedule, yes, it is rather tight but you should have sufficient time, if you leave for Jiri shortly after arrival to Kathmandu. In such case you should even have time for a delay day or two in Lukla (delays do sometime occur in Lukla due to adverse weather conditions...).

Please do not hesitate to let us know should you have any further questions.

    Happy trekking in Nepal
    Rasmus

Ps. Madhav, if any comments to the above, please do not hesitate to correct me :)
