“I enjoyed a truly exhilarating experience on my coast to coast walk, completed last Saturday with a celebratory paddle in the sea at Robin Hood's Bay before hurling the pebble that I had carried from St. Bee's. It was a full catalogue of enriching moments that allowed for two fine, gentle warm days at the start then 5 days of torrential rain whilst walking through Lakeland. That gave added edge to the challenges of scaling the high peaks and the experience of wading or leaping across swollen becks. Bogland is a wonderful word that really doesn't describe the glutinous, slimy, boot grabbing mud with it's own special odour. Then with weather improving it was through the changing scenes of moorland towards the ultimate destination arrived at on a glorious sunny day. The choice of B and B's, small inns and even the hostel at Kirkby Stephen were all wonderful, each with their own particular character but all with a warmth of hospitality and great breakfasts and always good food nearby for an evening meal. The adventure was given magical colour and life by the people that I walked with at times, These chance encounters gave opportunity to swap stories of life and of the experiences of each day. Helping hands when 'a bit off course' helping hands when crossing a beck and encouragement given to others was all part of the kaleidoscope that made this such a great way to spend two weeks exploring this wonderful country that is England. Among fellow walkers were Canadians, Americans and Australians who will all have returned home with great memories of what our small country has to offer. “It was a great trip. Mark the guide was excellent throughout. It was a little disappointing not to have a couple more people from overseas, but the small group worked well together. The standard of accommodation was generally very good, one of the B & Bs in Borrowdale was poor. I know everyone gave a little to make the trip happen, but it was well worth it.”
