Busy Guatemala

“Activity filled schedule with plenty of sites. “Guatemala time” takes a bit of getting used to but it normally works out in the end. Transport can be a bit hit and miss but we’ll worth it for the Mayan experience.”
A great trip on land, underground and on the sea.

“My wife and I are over 75 years old, but fit. We hiked and climbed Mayan pyramids, swam and trekked through an underground cave, snorkeled and dove reefs and shopped and dined in local markets. We took some extra trips, but passed on those, such as scaling an active volcano, that were not our cup of tea. By car, van, bus, boat, bike and foot, the adventure was always interesting. The tour guide handled all arrangements and ironed out the occasional glitch. However, he would arrange for local guides who had regional knowledge and views. We met many typical residents of three countries and interacted with them on a close and personal level.”

“This trip covers two of the three main touring areas of Guatemala, the highlands in the south and the Peten area (Mayan sites) in the north. It is run by the tour operator's local partners, with a high standard in vehicles, drivers and guides. The highlands segment (6 days) was excellent - the itinerary is varied and includes some very interesting places not commonly covered on other tours in this area. There is also a good amount of free time in lovely Antigua, so that you can fit in the Pacaya volcano trip (half day, either morning or afternoon) as an option. The Peten section was executed by another one of WE's local partners and it visits the fabulous Mayan sites of Tikal and Yaxha. We were not so impressed with the third site, Ceibal. Accommodation standard is generally very good, and the Barcelo in Guatemala is a lovely base, the Hotel Camino Real Tikal in Peten, is a lovely resort hotel and convenient to Tikal and Yaxha, but 40 minutes from Flores.”
