Other Practical InformationWhat is the Salkantay trek? This is a multi-day hike which connects to Machu Picchu crossing the high mountains and also the rain forest on its way. The Salkantay trek gets this name due to the Salkantay snowed peak being this the highlight of the experience while reaching 5200 meters high (17060 feet). This is a very challenging trek but with beautiful scenery and deep contact with nature. When do I need to book my trek? This is an alternative trek to Machu Picchu, it doesn’t require a permit to be hiked but it does need one to the Machu Picchu visit. This means that we need to book in advance as well because, believe it or not, the entrances can get sold out. We advise you to book this trek at least 3 months in advance to avoid any last-minute stress. Always, the sooner is the better so, if you can book months in advance we encourage you to do so. Is Humantay lake included in this trek? Yes, it is included in all of the variations of the Salkantay trek. We have a lodge in Soraypampa, the village next to the uphill to the lake. Humantay is one of the highlights of this trek. What kind of gear do I need to bring? This trek will be a multi-day hike which means that you will need trekking gear such as trekking boots, trekking pants, waterproof jackets and hat, trekking socks, walking sticks, base layers, a trekking backpack, etc. We have a full packing list page to recommend exactly what to bring so this experience gets to be more comfortable. Is this trek family-friendly? The answer to this question is more on a case-by-case basis, based on the age(s) of the family member. Remember that even though they are vacations, it’s still trekking so it is a physical challenge for everybody. If the children in your family are used to this kind of experience then they will be ok and most importantly, they will have fun. The same for the older members of the family, having a clear idea of their experience on hiking and also their health situation so they can get the best out of the tour. How cold is it on the trek? When hiking the Salkantay trek, the contact to the high mountains is inevitable, the higher it gets, the colder it is, so, we advise you to dress up warm and bring layers for this trek. Temperatures can get to 0°C or 32°F but our equipment is special for this kind of weather. Are there any extra activities on the way? Along the trek you will find ziplining, a swing near a cliff, and coffee farms, we include all of these, except the zipline on our itinerary. Is there snow on the Salkantay Trek? Since we will be climbing to 4900 meters high, the presence of snow it’s very likely. Especially in the wet season. This will give the hike a unique style and sights. Dress up warm and with good trekking boots for this. Does this trek include hiking poles? No, this trek does not include the hiking poles but we strongly advise you to bring them. You can bring your own or rent them from us but this item is a must for your experience to reduce the impact on your knees and ankles. What’s the weather like on the trek? It depends a lot on the season, in the dry season, rain and snow are not that much likely but not impossible. During the wet season, the chances of rain and snow are higher, so we always advise bringing layers and thermal clothing for this trek. Is it all camping on the Salkantay Trek? No, our itinerary includes a night at our lodge in Soraypampa, our glass cabañas, and then a night on our Hobbit houses in Loreta. The rest of the nights will be in campsites with all the accommodations needed. The last night is always at a hotel in Aguas Calientes to enjoy the guided tour through Machu Picchu the next morning. How’s the food on the trek? Food will be provided by our trekking chefs during the campings. These will be hot meals cooked in situ and based on the dietary needs of the participants being able to cater to every single need. Our trekking chefs will cook all the 3 different meals for you: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. These meals will be specially made for providing the needed energy for hiking and to recover from the hiking without losing any of the flavor. The last lunch is not included but your leading guide will recommend options based on your budget. What’s the total distance I’m going to hike? 52 Km/33 Miles At what time will we return to Cusco? After catching a bus down to Aguas Calientes, hikers will take a two-hour train ride along the Sacred Valley, and arrive in Ollantaytambo. From here, an Alpaca Expeditions bus will be waiting to take hikers on the two-hour trip back to Cusco. The group will return to Cusco between 7 and 8 p.m., depending on what time the train leaves Aguas Calientes. Where are we going to get dropped off? Our service is always door to door. We will pick you up from the hotel and drop you off at the hotel too.
