  • Walking the Boundary of King Offa’s Mercia
  • Historic Castles and Abbeys Dating From 1066
  • Border Country of England and Wales
  • Walking in the Wye Valley
The "Offa's Dyke" tour starts from Chepstow and ends in Knighton. The "Offa's Dyke" tour is a walking trip that takes 8 days taking you through Chepstow, Hay On Wye, Kington, Knighton and 3 other destinations in Wales and Scotland. This is a self-guided private tour that includes accommodation, transport, meals and others.

A walk back through history to King Offa’s Mercia on the border of England and Wales. Once upon a time in the 8th century, there was a ruthless King of Mercia called Offa. Such trouble had he from Welsh marauders nibbling at the toes of his kingdom, that once and for all he decided to define his territory and built a huge earthwork to do so, generally following the high ground with commanding views into the mountains and down into the valleys. Today the remaining 80 miles of embankment forms Britain’s longest archaeological monument and the basis of a famous walk: Crossing the border between England and Wales more than 10 times, the Offa’s Dyke National Trail path follows some of the finest scenery in both countries for 177 miles (285 km). Our walk follows the southern half of this trail from Chepstow to Knighton, (about half this walking distance in total). It is a journey packed with interest through patchworks of fields, over windswept ridges, across infant rivers, by ruined castles and into the old border market towns. Traditional farming methods have more or less remained intact and the hedgerows, oak woods and hay meadows form good wildlife habitats, home of buzzards and the rare Red Kite. You might even discover the even rarer Welsh Red Dragon!

Review for another Sherpa Expeditions tour
“Excellent communication, always kept in the loop while arrangements were being made. The accommodation was generally outstanding, very good value, especially considering that there is often not a great deal of choice. The route notes all very up to date, extremely detailed with lots of useful tips. However I didn't have to consult the map often as the trail was amazingly well marked. With all the logistics (accommodation, baggage transfers, meals) taken care of, it was easy to relax and enjoy the spectacular countryside. So much of interest to see en route!”

4 - Very Good
Review for another Sherpa Expeditions tour
“Experienced bush walkers will find this a very different experience as this more a crossing of country of varying geology and vegetation than a walking exploration in an untouched/untamed remote area. The emphasis is more on covering distance and viewing the big picture, than observing/discovering micro kingdoms. Time spent beforehand studying the proposed route, terrain, history and ecological features will definitely
enhance the trip. Due to the pace and hard tarmac/roadway, additional cushioning innersoles will assist on reducing the impact of jarring on the
knees which compounds with each additional day of continuous pounding. It's a great way to see the country andunderstand the geography, and I really enjoyed it. It's not difficult but could be arduous or take it's toll if
you are not walking-fit (ie walk 6 hrs in 8 hr period), agile, sure footed
and kitted out with good boots, weather protection, comfortable backpack and appropriate snacks.”

Review for another Sherpa Expeditions tour
“We took a self-guided tour in Cornwall from Marazion to Mevagissey. It was our first experience of the kind and we absolutely loved it. It was very convenient to have all the accommodations, itinerary and luggage transfer arranged for you and, in my view, it was very well worth it. The tour was easy to book, the communications with the tour consultant were very satisfactory and the overall experience was extremely positive and inspiring. It's very likely that we will book some other walking tours with Sherpa Expeditions. For overseas customers like ourselves, I recommend to tack on a day in Penzance before the tour (we went to the Minack Theatre and walked around in Penzance). St Michael's Mount is a must in Marazion (you have to arrive at Marazion early for that). Also a day or two in Fowey after the end of the tour - we went to Lanhydrock House and Gardens from there and Fowey itself is a charming little town with an amazing history.”
