Although not one of the most popular holiday destinations among Australians themselves, a trip to Cairns has become a must for international visitors due to its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now, this destination has transformed itself into a laidback and welcoming town that offers a wide range of activities for a holiday in Cairns.

A family experience of Sydney to Great Barrier Reef
4 - Very Good
  • Susan Walshaw
“We rated this trip based on the activities and the places we stayed, which were very good. However, after leaving Sydney where everything was wonderful, things went downhill. The problems were based around the misinformation given to providers of the shuttle services and using the cheapest form of transfer. This resulted in being taken to the wrong hotel, and time (hours) wasted when we should have been settled and enjoying our holiday together as a family. Rather than sitting back and relaxing we found the whole experience extremely disappointing and stressful. The rail journey was terrible, 2hrs 40 mins late then it broke down. Not your fault but according to locals this service is unreliable always late and prone to breakdowns. The seats were uncomfortable, carriage was stuffy, no interesting scenery, inability to call or use the internet, absolutely nothing special about this train. Again, a total waste of 14 hours on that day. Our only complaint about the accommodation is the Mantra where we went without hot water to our 3 rooms, not good after a day on the beach, and while our accommodation at Airlie Beach was good, we were more than 2 kilometers away from shops etc., and without a transport service. Luckily, I found the Whitsundays tours had a shuttle; it would make sense to include it. To void any more stressful situations we finally hired a car in Cairns for the rest of our trip. Using a more efficient shuttle service and the suggestions I have written in your 'Review Company' section would make the tour better and the costs would not be that much different as I have already checked it out..”

“It was once in a lifetime experience! The trip you will never forget! Discovery Nomads added a helicopter flight over Sydney for free!!!! I was so happy, it’s amazing! Great Barrier Reef and Whiteheaven beach are out of this world! Highly recommended!”

Cairns - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • The outstanding attraction of the Cairns area and any tour in Australia is undoubtedly the Great Barrier Reef. You can organise diving, snorkelling or other trips while based in Cairns to see one of the planet’s most spectacular natural wonders.
  • Cairns has developed into a centre for adventure activities. Skydiving, hang gliding, bungee jumping and others are all offered here.
  • Barbecues are an integral part of Australian culture, and in Cairns, you can take advantage of the free barbecues located along the promenade to take part in this cherished Australian tradition.
  • Whale watching trips are a popular activity in July and August when humpback whales can be seen in the seas around Cairns.
  • There are good hiking trails around Cairns, and hiking enthusiasts should check out the trails in the forested mountains that surround the town.
  • Have a dip in the artificial ‘lagoon’, a large public swimming pool enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, free of charge. It is especially popular between October and May when the sea becomes unsafe due to dangerous jellyfish.
  • Another important natural attraction close to Cairns is the Daintree Rainforest, offering visitors the chance to catch sight of some of the area’s unique wildlife.

Travel Tips

  • Peak season runs from May to November. The rainy season begins in December with chances of flooding.
  • The centre of town is quite small and can be covered comfortably on foot.
  • For popular activities such as diving and skydiving, if you are willing to stay on ‘standby’ for a cancellation, then you can save a significant amount of money since many companies offer large reductions.
