Other Practical InformationArgentina's official currency is the Peso Argentino. You can change your money in banks or currency exchange centers. Never change your money on the streets to the people offering this service to you. The airport is also not a good place as the exchange rate is never good. Big cities like Buenos Aires, Mendoza or Ushuaia have plenty of establishments accepting credit cards and you will find ATMs quiet easily. In small towns like El Calafate or El Chalten, this is not very common. So we recommend to take some cash with you while traveling there. The security situation during daytime is fine. You can walk around in different tourist areas without any problem. Like in every big city, you have to be aware of pickpockets. Try not to show off your jewelry, Rolex watches, iphones and keep an eye on your bags. That's all. In the evening, if you have to go to a place that is far away from the hotel, it's better for you to take a taxi (or Uber). Giving tips at restaurants as well as to drivers and tour guides is common. For restaurants we generally suggest leaving 10 to15 percent of the total bill amount. In big restaurants, you can add it on your credit card, but in small local restaurants it's common to leave the tip in cash on the table (in Argentine pesos or US dollars). During tours, we recommend that you give between USD5 to USD10 for drivers and USD20 to USD50 for your guides depending on whether it is a half day or a full day tour. Tap water in Argentina is safe. But if you are not used to it, it's better for you to buy bottles of water, especially during your travels.
