The Balkan Explorer 2017 tour starts in Budapest and ends in Ljubljana. The Balkan Explorer 2017 is a Explorer tour that takes 15 days taking you from Budapest to Ljubljana and 7 other destinations. The Balkan Explorer 2017 includes trip leader, accommodation, meals, transport and some activities. Please see the Includes section for details.

Join us as we tour the Balkans and discover the very best on offer – from historically charged capitals to the sun-soaked Dalmatian Coast and so much more in between. We’ll encounter tourist favourites such as picture-perfect Dubrovnik and romantic Budapest, as well as other less-known hideaways like timeless Mostar and incomparable Kotor. In a region where the landscapes we drive through are as spectacular as the destinations we visit, this tour of the Balkans is about experiencing a region whose rich culture and history is as varied and fascinating as its unforgettable scenery.
Day 1 Budapest, Hungary

Your house in Budapest awaits. Meet your Trip Leader and prepare for two days to get down and Danube (that be the river) with twin cities, Buda and Pest. Check out Hero's Square, Parliament House, the National Palace, Fisherman's Bastion and swanky Andrássy Ave.

Included today:
-Driving tour of Budapest

Meals:
-Dinner

Day 2 Budapest

Free day = Put down your Rubik's Cube and take on a city with enough baroque, neoclassical and art nouveau architecture to keep you puzzled for hours. Take to the waters at the Gellért or Széchenyi Baths and don't leave til you're pruny. Wave pool, anyone?! Indulge in a spa treatment then visit the Buda Castle or House of Terror Museum. Tonight, hang with the hipsters and drink local fruit brandy at one of the original ruin bars.

Included today:
-Entry into the Gellert Baths

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 3 Budapest to Belgrade, Serbia

More of Eastern Europe's unique mix of glasnost and capitalism as we dig into Belgrade, capital of modern-day Serbia as well as the former Yugoslavia. A product of the former nations of Yugoslavia, Serbia's religious and political past has cultivated a diverse cultural landscape throughout the city.

Take a tour along the banks of the mighty Danube and into Belgrade's Old Town district to investigate the local hot spots down Prince Michael Street, the main pedestrian walk about town. Thank your patient hunger with a local stew and sip some traditional plum brandy. You'll fit right in.

Included today:
-Guided tour of Belgrade

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 4 Belgrade

Another day of Danube-side wanderings and museum explorations. Thankfully, Belgrade isn't a huge city so pack your agenda with as much sightseeing as possible. Think: Belgrade Fortress, the bohemian hub Skadarlija and Republic Square.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 5 Belgrade to Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Next: beat the crowds in up-and-coming Sarajevo. Recovering from its dark past, torn apart by war in the 90s, the beautiful city is still heroically rebuilding itself and is widely underrated. Honour the victims of the 1995 genocide at the haunting Srebrenica Genocide Memorial, a sober reminder of the greatest atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

Included today:
-Visit to Srebrenica Genocide Memorial

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 6 Sarajevo

A free day to explore one of Europe's most underrated cities. Go underground in the war-time tunnels under the airfield or check out the city's mosques, synagogues and churches. Round off with Sarajevo's best, food-wise.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Sarajevo Tunnel Tour

Day 7 Sarajevo to Dubrovnik, Croatia

We make the most of Mostar before lots more stunning gets pushed past the window as we head for the most famous walled city in Europe. Wander Dubrovnik's tiny cobblestoned streets and explore hidden cafés and shops before grabbing some dinner and checking out the glitzy nightlife.

Included today:
-Visit to Mostar
-Walking tour of Dubrovnik with local guide

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 8 Dubrovnik

A free day in Dubrovnik for the win! Check out the residential homes further up in the old town for awesome views and a local perspective. Then: a cold beer on the wall as the sun sets over the Adriatic. This is the good life.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Sea kayaking

Day 9 Dubrovnik to Budva, Montenegro

The Dalmatian coast is spotted with all sorts of wonders and today we head off for one more in Montenegro. Make sure you climb up the parapet in Kotor, the view will take away whatever breath you have left.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 10 Budva

Part beach resort part walled medieval wonder-city, Budva should keep you well occupied today. Lucky you, this city is a hidden gem. Set foot and explore the backstreets of Budva, then share your finds with the group later.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 11 Budva to Zadar, Croatia

Hear the sounds of the sea? The Sea Organ is a quirky art installation that sits amongst the Zadar's eclectic mix of Roman ruins and public art, which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps. This, and more cool sights await you on a guided city tour.

Included today:
-Guided tour of Zadar

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 12 Zadar to Plitvice Lakes

Get ready for the blissful waterfalls at the Plitvice Lakes National Park, but not before a stop in the small village of Nadin. Considered to be the most ecological wine district in Croatia, (as most of the grapes on its territory are harvested organically) this place is a little slice of vino heaven.

Included today:
-Wine tasting in Nadin

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 13 Plitvice Lakes

Today is brought to you by Mother Nature. Made up of 16 lakes connected by streams and waterfalls and surrounded by 300 square kilometres of national park, Plitvice Lakes didn't make it onto the UNESCO World Heritage list without reason. Hike up to see the tallest waterfall in Croatia or glide across the crystal blue lakes in a rowboat. Mindfulness just got a whole new meaning.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 14 Plitvice Lakes to Ljubljana, Slovenia

Shoot one last longing look at the Lake before arriving in Ljubljana (lyoob-lya-nah) - capital of Slovenia. Tonight, hit up military-barracks-turned-bar-and-gallery-strip, Metelkova Mesto for a tea or vino with a side of live music and underground art installations.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
- Ljubljana at Night Tour

Day 15 Ljubljana to Budapest, Hungary

We're outta here after breakfast for our final journey together to Budapest.

-Breakfast
