TOUR OVERVIEW
Road Biking Romania And The Transalpina tour starts in Bucharest and ends in Maldaresti. Road Biking Romania And The Transalpina is a bicycle tour that takes 7 days taking you from Bucharest to Maldaresti and through other destinations in Romania.

Romania is a special country and probably one of the most underrated cycling destinations in the world. With mountains to rival the Alps, countryside to compare with the best anywhere in Europe, surprisingly good roads with very little traffic and thousands of years of history, Romania is a road biker's dream destination. Our Romania and the Transalpina by Road Bike is a genuine bucket-list trip and a fantastic introduction to road cycling in Romania. The riding is just amazing! The road surfaces are excellent, especially on the big climbing days, the traffic is light and often non-existent, the views are just jaw-dropping, day after brilliant day and coffee stops are often taken in UNESCO World Heritage-listed villages.

This fully supported trip for road cyclists, especially if you enjoy a good climb. We will be riding in the famed Romanian region of Transylvania, steeped in history, myth and legend as well as home to the Carpathian mountains and Transylvanian plateau. We have planned the route carefully so that we have a nice balance between big climbing days and easier days and out of the five main riding days, two are loop rides and three are point-to-point. Spending two nights in Sibu, Romania’s cultural capital with its noble Saxon history, art-nouveau facades and gold-embossed church, countless museums and even more coffee houses to relax apres-ride and enjoy an ambience that could be compared to Girona or Tuscany is another highlight. This is a tour full of highlights and we start with and end with beautiful climbs that are beginning to attract the attention of the cycling world and are destined to become legends. We start with the Transfagarasan, which is already being touted as one of Europe's best alpine roads and a breathtaking climb up to Balea Lake at 2,000 metres elevation. We end with an epic day riding the Transalpina, Romania's highest road which tops out at 2,145 metres and was summed up well by Cycling.co.uk saying “Romania’s highest pass combines perfect hairpins and pristine tarmac with jaw-dropping views. Welcome to the Transalpina Highway”

In between, we have three days cycling through the back roads of the Transylvanian plateau to visit a precession of picture-postcard, UNESCO World Heritage-listed towns of Cincsor, Sighișoara, Sibiu and countless Saxon and Transylvanian villages. There is a real time-travel effect to cycling in Romania and whether it's crossing the Piata Mare in Sibiu, riding the lanes of 19th-century villages where traffic stops at noon for the daily goose-crossing or the morning coffee in the shade of a 13th century fortified church, this is a cycling trip like no other.
