The Iron Gates Natural Park and Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park with its iconic blue lakes are our main points of interest for one week of outdoors fun.

Plus, you get to see the Bigar Waterfall, considered to be one of the most stunning waterfalls in the world and a unique Catholic cathedral where Jesus is painted alongside Lenin and John Lennon.
Day 1 Arrival and transfer from Bucharest Guest house

Airport pickup and drive to Eselnita.
Driving time: 5-6 hours
We spend the night in Eselnita.

Day 2 Kayaks and river cruises Guest house

We spend the day cruising the most impressive part of the Danube, the gorges created at the Iron Gates section. We’ll see thousands years old ruins from the time of the Roman Empire as well as the highest rock sculpture in Europe. We enjoy a kayak tour on the Danube later in the day.

On the territory of the natural park Iron Gates, the Danube forms the longest defile in Europe (134 km) and in its narrowest sector creates the spectacular Great and Small Danube Gorges (Cazanele Dunarii) where tall and abrupt rocky hills like Ciucarul Mic (313 meters) and Stirbatul Mic (626 meters) border the river.

We spend the night in Eselnita.

Day 3 Hiking day Guest house

We go on a couple of hours scenic hike inside the Iron Gates Natural Park to see from the top the panoramic view of the gorges. If the weather allows us, we team up with the park rangers to explore the mysterious Ponicova Cave.

The variety of the relief, the climate's Mediterranean influences and the presence of the Danube defile make the Iron Gates Natural Park one of the richest areas of Romania in terms of biodiversity. Important and valuable species, some unique in the country, are found in the park.

We spend the night in Eselnita.

Day 4 View from Serbia Guest house

We take a one day break to relax our muscles and drive to neighboring Serbia to see the gorges from another perspective, but also the fortress of Golubac, a large medieval construction with a tumultuous history. We visit the Iron Gates Museum on the Romanian border point.

You can also choose to stay in Romania and do more hiking or kayaking.

Driving time: around 4-5 hours
We spend the night in Eselnita.

Day 5 Hiking day Guest house

We drive early morning to Sasca Romana, in the heart of Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park, one of Romania’s most beautiful sites. We have lunch and then we enjoy an afternoon of hiking. We’ll cross rock tunnels, tagging along the valley of Nera River until we reach the perpetual blue lake Ochiul Beiului.

Driving time: around 4 hours
We spend the night in Sasca Romana.

Day 6 Hiking day Guest house

We spend all day hiking alongside Nera’s gorges, reaching the Devil’s Lake, a one of a kind turquoise lake formed through the collapse of a cave ceiling. The scenery of the gorges is one of the most breathtaking in Romania.

We spend the night in Sasca Romana.
