Starting in Belgrade and ending in Zagreb, the Balkan Essentials – 10 Days tour is a guided cultural, religious and historic sites trip that takes 10 days. You will visit Mostar, Belgrade, Sarajevo and 5 other destinations in 4 different countries. Balkan Essentials – 10 Days is a small group tour which will include accommodation in hotels, transport and others. See below for further details.

On this tour, you will experience some of the highlights of Serbia and travel further around the Balkans discovering destinations such as Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia, and Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Serbia is a land of incredible beauty, cultural and historical wealth, unique cuisine, bustling cities and world-famous nightlife, so it is no secret that the country has been attracting an increasing number of tourists from Europe and the rest of the world. Monuments protected by UNESCO, spas famous for their therapeutic effects, mountains and ski-centers are the most visited locations in the Balkan peninsula.
Upon arrival in Belgrade the capital of Serbia, you will be welcomed by your Tour Manager and escorted to your hotel. When you get into your coach, just relax for the short drive from Nikola Tesla Airport to your hotel. You’ll see Belgrade’s prominent blocks, classic examples of socialist architecture built after World War II, and modern business centres, among which the Ušće Center surely predominates. During the drive, enjoy stories about the Western Gate of Belgrade, famous Belgrade Arena and the monumental Palace of Serbia. Check-in at your hotel.

After a bit of time to rest, prepare yourself for a traditional Serbian dinner in Skadarlija, the Bohemian heart of Belgrade. It’s well-known that the best tourist attraction of Serbia is local food accompanied by traditional music. Try out numerous local specialities and get to know each other during a pleasant dinner in an authentic restaurant. Return to the hotel and overnight.
After breakfast, it is time for our coach/walking tour around Belgrade, a capital that is well known for its various architectural styles, dynamic history and fantastic views of one of the biggest river confluences in the whole of Europe. Start the tour visiting Yugoslav History Museum, a memorial complex devoted to the life and deeds of Josip Broz Tito, a political leader of Yugoslavia. Then you will pass by the stadium of FC Red Star, former European and World Cup champion, and proceed to Saint Sava Temple, a symbol and patron of Belgrade and an impressive building that can be seen from any part of the capital.

After a short break at the Temple’s plateau, the tour will continue to Slavija Square, Saint Mark’s Church, Serbian National Parliament and the President’s residency, until the Republic Square, the most central point of Belgrade, which is surrounded by cultural institutions such as the National Theatre and National Museum.

Then, head out for a walking tour through lively Knez Mihailo Street, the main walking and shopping zone, and visit the Congregational Church, just across from the building of Serbian Patriarchy. Hear great stories about “Question Mark – ?”, the oldest tavern in the city, and continue to Kalemegdan Park and Belgrade Fortress, the most important cultural-historic complex of the city, situated on the confluence of the rivers Sava and Danube.
Breakfast and check-out. We’ll depart Belgrade and drive towards Western Serbia via the picturesque Ovčar-Kablar Canyon that extends above the Western Morava River. Upon arrival at the famous Zlatibor Mountain, the first royal resort in Serbia, enjoy a relaxing walk around the town centre of this prominent air spa.

Afterwards, proceed to Tara National Park and contemplate the natural beauty from an authentic, retro Balkan train, Šargan 8 Railway. At the beginning of the 20th century, the train used to be a part of the railway from Belgrade to Sarajevo. The train will take you back in time while you enjoy the mountain scenery and numerous tunnels and viaducts. Arrive at a village known as “Wooden Town”, or Drvengrad, that was built by prominent movie director Emir Kusturica. All the objects, including the hotel, apartments, galleries, shops, cinema and churches are made of natural materials, mostly from wood. Since the traditional film festival Kustendorf is held here, Wooden Town has had the honour of accommodating the biggest movie stars, including Johnny Depp, Monica Belucci, Jim Jarmusch and many others.

Later, while taking in the beauty and silence of the mountain, Mokra Gora, you will enjoy a traditional Serbian dinner and then overnight at the local hotel.
Breakfast and check-out. The tour continues to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After a short drive, we arrive in Višegrad, where Emir Kusturica used his imagination and creativity to build Andrićgrad or the “Stone Town”. It is a cultural centre with numerous buildings and facilities built on the banks of Drina River. Nearby is a famous bridge protected by UNESCO that was described in the title of a novel “The Bridge on the Drina” by Nobel prize-winning writer Ivo Andrić. In his honour, Kusturica’s town was called Andrićgrad. Here in Andrićgrad, we will have a break. You may order a lunch in an unusual restaurant called “Zlatna moruna”, the interior of which is decorated with frescoes by a well-known artist Bisenija Tereščenko.

Afterwards, we’ll continue the drive to Sarajevo and check-in at the hotel. After a short rest, the Sarajevo sightseeing tour will start, covering all the main sights: the building of Vijećnica or the City Assembly, old downtown and the historic and cultural center of Sarajevo with authentic shops and souqs from the Ottoman era, an orthodox church from the 16th century, Gazi Hüsrev Bey mosque, Sahat Tower from the 17th century and the first public toilette in Europe. Then we will go on to Latin Bridge, where Gavrilo Princip shot the successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand, which caused the beginning of World War I. We will also go to Bezistan market, a complex from the 16th century, and then to the main pedestrian zone, Ferdahija. Return to the hotel and overnight.
Breakfast and check-out. Drive to one of the most beautiful cities of the Balkan Peninsula, Mostar. During the walking tour around Mostar, you will visit the symbol of this city and the most photographed sight in the country – the Old Bridge (a UNESCO protected monument). You will then proceed to Koski Mehmed Pasa mosque, the Crooked Bridge and the old tanner’s quarter, Tabhana.

After the tour, we’ll have free time in Mostar for getting a lunch at the bank of the Neretva River, with an amazing view of the bridge as it rises above you. The excursion continues to Blagaj) an old town from the 15th century. Blagaj was the crib of Islam of today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina when dervish Sari Satluk built a khanqah at the river-head of Buna. During a short tour, enjoy the view of the monastery that rests beneath the cliffs on the shores of the emerald green river Buna.

The next destination of the day is Trebinje, a picturesque town with a wonderful mix of sights that originate from different cultures. Start the tour with a visit to Arslanagica Bridge, a photographer’s dream. Then, during a leisure walk through the narrow streets of the old town, you’ll see the most important sites of Trebinje on your way to “Poet’s Market” where you can sit under 115-year-old trees, the symbol of the town.
Breakfast and check-out. This day is devoted to the Republic of Montenegro, a country that boasts of a rich heritage and immense natural beauty. The Bay of Kotor, with its unique landscape, is a must-see location for more than 500 cruise ships per year.

On the way to marvellous Kotor, we will make a stop at the town of Perast, a little baroque-style settlement. From Perast, you’ll start a relaxing boat ride along Boka Kotorska Bay to the picturesque island of Our Lady of the Rock. This manmade Island hosts a church with valuable paintings by local artists, silver votive tablets and a famous votive tapestry.

After the boat ride, head to Kotor, an old Mediterranean town that dates back to the 12th and 14th century and go on a walking tour around this UNESCO site. See the prominent sights: St. Nicolas and St. Luke Church, Cathedral of St. Tryphon and more. In Kotor, you’ll have free time to wander around the old bricked town or have lunch at one of the romantic squares of the old town.

The next destination is Dubrovnik, one of the most significant monuments in the world, and one of Europe’s best-preserved walled cities from the 7th century. The old town is surrounded with a 2 km long wall that gives a great opportunity to see old Dubrovnik from above during a one-hour relaxing walk: city churches, fortification structures and monuments are a real must-see. Dubrovnik enchanted so many people throughout history, many of who devoted their pieces of art to the city, so in this city of marble and stone, you’ll find numerous art galleries and unique shops. In the historical centre, you will visit the Main Square Stradun, Pile Gate, Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, the Old Town Walls, the church of St. Blaise, the cathedral, the Jesuit church, Orlando’s Column, Onofrio’s Large Fountain, the city port and other hidden gems. Hotel check-in and overnight.
After breakfast, have a free morning in Dubrovnik and check-out. Drive along the beautiful Makarska coast with wonderful views over the Croatian islands, the wine and olive plantations, and stone-made villages.

Upon afternoon arrival in Split, start the sightseeing tour of this large Dalmatian city which was founded 1700 years ago and preserves an enormously rich history. Your guide will lead you through the narrow streets of the Diocletian’s Palace (a UNESCO Heritage site) built in the 4th century by a Roman Emperor. See the perfectly preserved basement and former Temple of Jupiter in the central ancient Peristyle Square. You’ll pass through the Golden and Silver Gates and walk via noisy markets and Riva, the shopping zone.

After the tour, go to the hotel for check-in and overnight.
Breakfast. In the morning, drive to Šibenik, a city famous for its narrow curvy streets, stone-made houses, lots of stairs and city wall remains. The city has a Mediterranean atmosphere and hosts lots of monuments, among which St. James Cathedral (UNESCO protected monument), constructed by locals for hundreds of years, has a special place.

In the late afternoon arrive at the world-famous Plitvice National Park. You may like to relax and enjoy the dinner in the hotel restaurant or in a nearby local restaurant.
After breakfast, start exploring Plitvice Lakes, a magnificent area that consists of 16 connected lake terraces. On old maps it was named “Devil’s Garden”, and it is the first site in the Balkans that was granted UNESCO World Heritage status. You will enjoy a 3-hour guided tour that visits the upper and lower lakes and lets you enjoy the natural surroundings. Although swimming is forbidden here, you will be able to relax in this green paradise.

Your final stop in this great Balkan tour is the Croatian capital, Zagreb. This small gem of European culture and civilization is located in the heart of the continent. The sightseeing tour around Zagreb will show you all main Zagreb sights: Kaptol (the medieval part of Zagreb), the Franciscan Monastery and the Church of St. Francis. You’ll walk around a farmer’s market and visit the Baroque Church of St. Mary. The tour will end in the heart of Zagreb, at Ban Josip Jelačić’s monument in the square named after him.
Breakfast and hotel check-out. Depending on the time of your departure, use your free time and explore Zagreb on your own. Transfer to the airport. End of services.
