Pandas and warriors
5 - Excellent
“This was an excellent trip, well organised, well thought out, with travel times between destinations allowing for enough time to fully appreciate the experience. Our guide (Dennis) was exceptional, passionate about his country, it's history, it's politics, it's culture, and clealry enjoyed emersing us in our experiences. The children had a fantastic time discovering a new culture and ways of living, they learnt to speak some chinese, tried new foods that they would never dream of trying at home, and learnt to appreciate thier own culture a lifestyle.”
Pandas and Warrioirs
5 - Excellent
“Excellent trip and highly recommended. It would be impossible to see and do as much as we did within the time scale if you were an independent traveller in china. It's an intense journey full of noise , smells and colours. We left with so many wonderful memories and it's a journey that will never be forgotten.”
PANDAS & WARRIORS
5 - Excellent
“A wonderful adventure! We really got a good feel for how modern China is developing (William was very informative and honest). It was inspiring to find that the Chinese are so proud of their country's past and present acheivements (their perceivement of it anyway). It was wonderful to see the elderly in the parks enjoying themselves and their friendliness was unexpected. I have taken home a great respect for Chinese people and their traditions. ”
A fascinating trip
5 - Excellent
“An illuminating and often astonishing introduction to a populous, exponentially developing, hugely impressive but also contradictory country. A week after coming home, I am still processing the experiences and thinking about everything we saw.”
There will be a welcome briefing this evening with an optional dinner at a local restaurant. Today is a free day to explore Beijing, a visit to the Science and Technology museum located close to the Olympic Park and the Water Cube which is also open for swimming is one popular option.

*Dongfang Hotel, or similar*
For these two days we will enjoy the sights and sounds of China's capital. On the first day we usually walk through the hutongs (narrow alleys of old Beijing) from our hotel to Tiananmen Square (30-45 minutes walking), and spend some time getting to grips with the scale of the square (the largest in the world and able to hold over a million people). We then enter The Forbidden City with its innumerable courtyards and temples and spend between 2-3 hours exploring it on foot (comfortable shoes recommended). It can be hot and crowded here so remember to bring some drinking water, snacks and sun protection. Depending on the time, we will either take a public bus (please note that there is no air-conditioning) straight back to the hotel, or we can have lunch nearby before going back. The rest of the day is free. The Red Theatre runs a Kungfu show in the evening, which your leader can help buy tickets for if you wish (optional - at additional cost).

On the second day in Beijing, after breakfast we take a public bus (for approx. 15 minutes) to the Temple of Heaven complex in the southern part of the city and spend a couple of hours or so exploring. It’s great fun watching (and maybe joining in with) the locals playing traditional games and doing their morning exercise in the park – dancing, tai chi, hacky-sack, and so on. We return by public bus and the rest of the day is free. If you didn’t take in a show last night, then an optional (not included) acrobatic show might be of interest to you this evening.

*Dongfang Hotel, or similar*
We take our luggage with us and drive north out of the capital and into the countryside to The Great Wall of China - Gubeikou Section (approx. 3-4 hours driving) - maybe you’ll be the first to see the Great Wall winding its way across the landscape. We check into our village guesthouse and have lunch to fuel us for our trek. This afternoon, we go on a 2-3-hour return walk from our guesthouse up onto and along part of the Great Wall – some parts are relatively steep and dilapidated (not recommended for vertigo sufferers). The Gubeikou Section was first built during the Qi Dynasty (550-557) and has not been reconstructed since 1644. We’ll see some of the ancient watchtowers, a reminder of The Wall's past glory and strategic importance. In fact, this section was originally named "Beikou", which literally means "Northern Pass" and worked as the northern defensive line of what is now Beijing. Once we reach the top the views are magnificent. We return via the same route but there is the option to take a bus back for anyone who is tired.

The evening is free; the guesthouse owner has been known to teach guests how to play mah-jong (a traditional Chinese tile-based game). The guesthouse is simple but cosy, has Western style toilets and hot showers.

*Jinshan Guesthouse (Basic Hotel), or similar*
This morning we have a local style breakfast and then there’s time for a short walk around the village or up to the nearby watchtower on The Great Wall to see the views in the early morning light before driving back to Beijing (approx. 4 hours’ drive). We stop just outside the city centre to visit the Summer Palace, a huge park dotted with impressive pavilions and temples which, like The Forbidden City was once the exclusive playground of China's emperors and their concubines. We usually have lunch before our guided tour, which will take at least two hours on foot. We enter from the north gate and walk to Wanshou Hill, meaning “Longevity Hill” which affords excellent views over Beijing, and we’ll also walk around Kunming Lake.

We take our private bus from the Summer Palace to Beijing West Railway Station, where we usually try to organise a dinner before boarding as there is minimal food selection available on the train. If you need help with luggage, it is possible to hire a porter at the station. In the evening we board a sleeper train to Zhengzhou - cabins are 4 berth. For many families this is a completely new experience and can be a real adventure, not only for the kids!

*Overnight Sleeper Train*
Arriving at Zhengzhou early in the morning, we’ll drive by private bus (approx. 2-3hrs) straight to Shaolin Temple, stopping for breakfast at a local restaurant en route. Shaolin Temple is seen as the birthplace of both Kung Fu and Zen Buddhism. The monastery has been destroyed and rebuilt many times since its original construction in 495 AD and is reputed to be the 'Number One Temple under Heaven'. Kung Fu was invented here by an Indian Buddhist monk who taught it to the monks as a form of exercise to counter their poor health as they had previously been engaged in only academic work in dark cramped conditions. Kung Fu in Shaolin means hard work and perfection not martial art. Kung Fu is based on the movements of five animals; the tiger, snake, crane, eagle and monkey, and the monastery still attracts martial arts devotees to this day. We will watch a show of the monk's skills; then it's time to take part in a Kung Fu class to see if we can replicate the moves!

We usually have lunch close to the temple before transferring to Luoyang city (approx. 1.5 hours’ drive), where we check into our hotel. There are no more planned activities today, but we recommend a visit to the main square in the evening to watch or perhaps join the locals dancing.

*Peony Hotel, or similar*
This morning we will visit the Longmen Grottoes (approx. 40 minutes’ drive), one of three greatest stone sculpture treasures in China. The caves here hold one of the most famous ancient collections of Chinese sculptures of life-like Buddha figures. There are reportedly 2345 caves and niches, 2800 inscriptions, 43 pagodas and over 100,000 Buddhist images carved out of the hard limestone cliffs, with the carving work beginning in 493 AD and carrying on for over 400 years. To protect this treasure along the Yi River it is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. We will spend a few hours exploring, enjoying the walk along the river, climbing up to the different caves, walking around the 17m tall Buddha statue and looking the 2cm statues in the Lotus Cave.

We transfer (approx. 30 minutes) to Longmen Railway Station and in the afternoon we catch the bullet train to Xi'an Railway Station (approx. 2hrs); the journey is the perfect opportunity to practise your language skills with those on board, with your leader on hand to act as an interpreter. Upon arrival we transfer to the hotel. Xi'an is one of China's former capitals, and one of the few cities in China to have retained its city walls, probably because they are so massive that no revolutionary was willing to tackle the huge task of removing them.

*Skytel Hotel, or similar*
Today we visit the famous terracotta warriors, about 1.5 hours drive away from downtown Xi’an. Originally four armies were planned, one at each point of the compass, life-size and lifelike. Three have been found and it is assumed the emperor's successors decided enough was enough before the fourth was begun. The first pit excavated had an estimated 6,000 figures in its one army. The third pit has been opened to the public, which contains the 'command post' for the entire operation. This is one of China's great tourist attractions, and some people may find the sheer numbers of visitors rather overpowering. We usually have lunch nearby at a family-run farmer’s restaurant before returning to Xi’an by private bus. In the afternoon, it is possible to go on an optional bike ride along the well-preserved city walls.

*Skytel Hotel, or similar*
In the morning we will visit the city and the Bell & Drum square at its heart, along with the Great Mosque. The Muslim Quarter is a fascinating place with the bustle of bazaars and food stalls. At around midday, we transfer to Xi’an Railway Station and catch a bullet train to Chengdu; the journey takes approx. 4 hours and you should arrive just after 5pm. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province, known for its spicy food and hotpots (mild hotpots are available as well as spicy ones) so prepare for some culinary delights for dinner!

*Garden City Hotel, or similar*
Chengdu is the home of the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, which we visit today. We leave the hotel at around 07:30am and drive to the Research Base (approx. 1 hours’ drive) with the aim of arriving in time to see the Giant pandas at feeding time, when these intriguing and rare animals are most active. Animals are unpredictable by nature and if they are not feeding, we will have the opportunity to watch the pandas partaking in what they do best - sleeping. Afterwards, we return to Chengdu and have some free time – perhaps visit the people’s park or go to the Sichuan Opera tonight (optional).

*Garden City Hotel, or similar*
Today we fly from Chengdu to Guilin in the morning and transfer by road for 2 hours through the stunning towering limestone scenery to Yangshuo. This region is famous for the steep-sided karst mountains that pierce the otherwise flat landscape of paddy fields, a view of a rural landscape that has changed little in centuries. Despite its small size Yangshuo has quite a tourist infrastructure due to its large transient population of backpackers and domestic tourists. In the afternoon we have the perfect excuse to sample more Chinese food, this time cooking for ourselves under the watchful eye of an expert at a cookery lesson. This will take place after a visit to Yangshuo market to see some of the ingredients used in Chinese cooking. We will eat our culinary creations together for dinner at the cookery school.

*Starway Hotel Xinfuan Yangshuo, or similar*
This morning we hire bicycles to explore the surrounding countryside with a local guide. Our bike ride takes us to the unusually shaped Moon Hill, a 15-20-kilometre ride away, from where we enjoy superb views of the surrounding area. Lunch is included today; we eat at a local restaurant on Moon Hill and then take a private transfer back to the hotel. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and stunning scenery around Yangshuo. There are many optional activities; you may choose a cruise on the Li River, Chinese massage or even another Kung Fu class, or watch the Liu Sanjie Show an outdoor performance set on a natural stage formed by the Li River and 12 peaks. Even if you choose just to relax this is an ideal place, you can take a stroll around the market and sample the local produce or enjoy one of the cafes and watch the world go by.

*Starway Hotel Xinfuan Yangshuo, or similar*
Today is a long day of travelling. This morning, we'll transfer back to Guilin Station (approx. 1.5 hrs) in time to catch a high-speed train to Shenzhen (approx. 3.5 hours). We then take a public intercity bus from Shenzhen to Hong Kong (approx. 3hrs). As there is a border crossing in between, we'll take our bags with us to walk the short distance across the border. We take taxis for the final leg from the Hong Kong bus station to our hotel, arriving at around 6pm. For those who want to do something this evening, perhaps consider the Sound and Light show at Victoria Harbour.

*Metropark Hotel Kowloon, or smilar*
This morning we take a walk (or the hotel shuttle bus) to the famous Tsim Sha Tsui promenade for a spectacular view of Victoria Harbour, passing the iconic Kowloon railway clock tower. We then board the star ferry across to Hong Kong Island. Hong Kong is mix of old and new and you will also see the Bank of China Tower once the tallest building in the world outside the US. Finally, we take a historic tram ride to Victoria Peak, famous for its stunning views (please note as this is a popular area the queue for the tram is often long). This afternoon is free for further sightseeing or shopping. One option is to visit Aberdeen Fishing Village which was once just that, a simple village, but is now a vibrant modern waterfront area, home to thousands of boat people on hundreds of junks (brightly coloured trawlers) who still live a traditional way of life. It is worth taking a ride on one of these boats to experience life on the water with the harbour's colours, sounds and odours.

*Metropark Hotel Kowloon, or similar*
End Hong Kong.
