Cycle the Baltics
5 - Excellent

“A great trip, blending cultural aspects, great sightseeing, exploring the 3 capital cities as well as some nice cycling. Terrain was nice and flat and was within the capability of everyone in our group. Distances were very manageable and there was a minimum of waiting around. Lukas, our guide and the driver were simply outstanding in getting us up on our bikes each day with a minimum of fuss. Fast turnaround time between finishing our cycling and being back on the move again on the bus.”

“I recently completed the Absolute Scandinavia tour and found it to be comprehensive and well laid out. The drawbacks were the inconsistency and constant changing of our guide and the lack of clarity of meeting expectations by some of the newer guides. There were also numerous times when there were explanations in 3 different languages, making it difficult to follow any narrative. I understand the desire for a full bus, but it became like a game of checkers with guides moving around almost daily. Speaking English seemed to be an afterthought and less important. language.”

“I did the first one back around 2002. It was fantastic. I had a great time. I shared my accom with a Scot from Glasgow, who was an interesting character, I'll leave it at that. We started in Vilnius and ended in Tallinn. By the look of the 2016 course guide it looks similar to 2002, just in reverse. There were only 5 of us, including Paulius our local leader from Klaepedia. The scenery was great. Lots of stone cottages, stone walls and roosting storks on farmhouse chimneys. The pace was nice and easy, no big hills to negotiate although a few long gradual climbs, that got the cardio system pumping. Back then you needed a separate visa to enter Latvia, but not the other 2 countries. This may have changed, if not don't think you can wing it at the border. It cost me a lost day in Vilnius, Lithuania while I negotiated with the Latvian embassy to get a visa after paying "an emergency process fee" in USD to the official who finally issued my visa.”

Baltic — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

If you’re looking for an authentic trip across Europe without the crowds of people, a tour to the Baltics is to be considered. Including the three beautiful countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, they have the perfect mix between culture, nature, and stone castles. Holidays to the Baltics are known for being one of the most affordable places to travel in Europe for those on a budget. You can get to the Baltics by flying into Warsaw, Poland and then taking the train over or you can take many direct flights as well.

Tour Highlights

  • Discover the Baroque style architecture of the old town of Vilnius, Lithuania, full of towering Catholic churches including the Vilnius cathedral. This is a perfect city to walk through the Old Town district discovering all their secret shops and bazaars. While you’re there, take a climb up the hill to Gediminas Castle especially in the morning to get a view of the sunrise over the city.
  • Venture across to Latvia’s capital city of Riga for a different Medieval architectural style with tall towers and the central square with the Riga Cathedral. A short walk away you’ll find the Freedom Square where you can whiteness the ceremonial changing of the guard daily.
  • Ending your Baltics tour will take you to Estonia where you can relax in the university town of Tartu that’s filled with young creative artists on every corner. You’ll find stunning art installations on the side of ancient crumbling churches. Time to take that artsy Instagram shot!

Travel Tips

  • The Baltics can be very cold during the winter and not the best for exploring, so it’s best to go during the spring and summer months for the best experience. This means between March - May and September - October to escape the heat and cold seasons.
  • All of the Baltic countries use the Euro (EUR) as of 2015 which makes it a breeze when traveling across borders here.
  • While there are trains throughout the Baltic countries, it’s much more convenient and affordable to travel by bus in this region. The buses are very comfortable with plenty of legroom and some have personal TV screens on each seat.
