A remote and scenic route to the summit of Africa's highest mountain. Approaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, fondly known as Kili, by the remote Shira Route is an exhilarating option for walkers keen to explore less trodden trails and who are comfortable in variable mountain conditions. From the forest and moorland to the caldera of Shira volcano, we explore the fascinating rock formations on the Shira plateau before traversing beneath the southern ice fields of Kibo. We enjoy stunning early morning views of Kibo and our day spent in the rarely visited Lent Hills will be a highlight before we join the main route to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5895m) on the crater rim. The eight day itinerary gives maximum possible acclimatisation and flexibility to enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery that extends from the volcanic summit to the vast African plains.

“This was one of the most fantastic and toughest trips I have done. The organisation, accommodation, and Porters were great. The food was fantastic not to mention the flushing toilet. Our head guide, Henry, was excellent. Extremely professional, helpful and caring. Each night he gave an extensive briefing session about what we could expect on the next day. He made sure we were all healthy and fit enough to complete the task ahead. The pace we trekked was suitable for all and the acclimatisation stages greatly helped us to get to the summit. I must add a special mention for our other guide, John (Tony Blair) Seka. Tony was informative, Professional, had a great sense of humour, well educated and his knowledge of the mountain was enormous. He answered all questions with ease even the silly ones. He constantly checked on our health and fitness to continue. His well mannered and gentle approach to all Trekkers and porters made him very popular and an excellent guide.”

“We had a great trek and made it to the top of Kili ok. Desma had a slip not far from the end of the trek - about 6k from the exit gate -and needed a few stitches in her leg just below the knee. She is fine and medically cleared for our next stage in the Serengeti. Thank you and the team in getting us onto the trek and to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of Paulo and VV (guide) in assisting Desma. Paulo drove up from Arusha to make sure everything was ok and helped Desma with money until I arrived. VV sat with Desma in the hospital the whole time as well. You have clearly got a very high quality team on the ground. We saw other companies dragging near comatose people to the summit - one of whom we suspect we later saw with acute AMS that evening. The care and attention our group received thru Florence and his team was exceptional. Although we have thanked them, could I ask you to reiterate our thanks to Paulo, VV, Florence, Tony "Blair"and the entire team.”

“Trekking Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions was an amazing experience. It was like a military operation; 58 porters and guides assisting 14 walkers reflected a really healthy ratio of staff to customers and ensured a high success rate to the summit. The route and strategy around managing altitude to avoid or minimise altitude sickness was thorough and the guidance we received was first class. The group was led by JT with a team of highly experienced and wonderful Tanzanians who displayed the happiest of dispositions. I highly recommend this walk and consider that the wonderful guides (both male and female) were the wind beneath my wings. Thank you.”

“Thought the trip was brilliant - well resourced, great leadership from JT, really professional and friendly guides: Crossman, Makete, Edoardo, Lucia, Hans, Angela. JTs leadership including his motivation, preparation of us and medical/health knowledge and care was first class - can't speak highly enough of him and we even had a drink with him on his day off when he was back. Ilburu lodge was also great. The trip was a lot more challenging mentally and physically that I had ever imagined!! But starting to appreciate our journey more and more as days go by..which was hard after we completed the climb where I promised I would never trek again! The most special part of the trip was the journey and support of all of us together which creates a lifetime bond.”
