  • Cross the Arctic Circle
  • Watch puffins and other sea birds
  • Enjoy the scenic views of Eyjafjörður and Hrisey islands
Visit Grimsey, an island that lies more than 40km north of mainland Iceland and is spread over an area of 5.3 sq.km. A green, grassy top with perpendicular cliffs on its sides, Grímsey is also the only point in Iceland that lies in the Arctic Circle.

Board the ferry to Grimsey from Dalvík, a fishing town about 45 km north of Akureyri at the western side of the Eyjafjörður. If the weather is good, the travel to and from the island offers impressive views of the mountains on both sides of Eyjafjörður.

Reach your destination after 3 hours of sailing through the fjords and across the open ocean. Enjoy the views of Hrísey Island on the way. If you are lucky, you might be able to spot whales in the sea during the trip. However, please be reminded that the ferry does not stop for a closer look.

Disembark the ferry at the harbour in Grímsey. Explore the island on your own for 3.5 to 4 hours. People often visit this northernmost Icelandic settlement in order to cross the Arctic Circle. However, Grímsey has a number of other things to offer.

Watching the midnight sun from the island early in the summer can be an unforgettable experience. The west coast of this island has beautiful coves, lined with basalt columns and skerries. Similarly, the eastern coast of the island boasts 100m-high cliffs that are home to nesting sea birds such as puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes. On the grassy parts of the island, one must walk with care to avoid treading on the numerous tern's nests and young chicks.

The island also has a church, a swimming pool and a small grocery store. There is also a handicrafts shop, an ATM and two guesthouses. Whey you are done sightseeing the island, return to the harbour, board the ferry and sail back to Dalvík.
