The West African Discoverer tour starts in Accra and ends in Dakar. The West African Discoverer is a trekking and hiking tour that takes 70 days taking you from Accra to Dakar and through other destinations in Africa.

This trip is ideal for someone who wants to explore the majority of West Africa and is happy to take it slowly. Do not expect it to mirror any trip that you have made to East or Southern Africa, because West Africa is so utterly different and this trip is designed to really show you how.

So will you see Africa's big game? Yes, but not to the extent that you would elsewhere. You will get to do and see so much more and without the annoying encumbrances of more tourist conscious destinations. There's forest trekking, village hikes, pirogue trips through swamplands and mountain walks to stunning waterfalls. There's village stays with dancing, music, culture and festivities; stunning beaches, sand and sun; boat trips to stilt villages; wonderful food; local beers and local football; history and culture; laughter and smiles. This is Africa at its rawest without the infrastructure that has been built up elsewhere and it is a privilege to be able to travel through it.

My only previous experience with Dragoman was from 20 years ago when I did 12 weeks in Central and South America. So I knew what to expect, and having then travelled with other overland tours, I can say Dragoman provides the best... Read more

While this trip did not have the scenery, antiquities, adventures of other Dragoman trips, it did expose us to a wonderful aspect of human life little witnessed by the rest of the world.

Local Payment The local payment is a group fund, paid separately from the trip price on the first day of the tour. It covers everything that the group does together on the ground. This is primarily hotel accommodation and campsite fees, meals whilst camping (but not while eating in restaurants), and included activities and puts money directly back to the local community. The local payment, or kitty system, is unique to overlanding tours and provides maximum flexibility and best value on the road - you can see exactly what is being paid for, you get everything at cost price, it keeps costs competitive by leveraging group expenses and saves on administrative costs. The fund is run by the tour guide, and any excess left over at the end is returned equally to the group. Local prices are estimated in USD when we print the brochure then reviewed monthly as local costs and exchange rates vary throughout the year. It's therefore important once you book your trip to check the website regularly and just before departure for any changes to the amount.
