Winter in Hunza Valley in Covid-time
5 - Excellent
  • Ruth Sari
“A little closer to the clouds - that's GhulkinIn the middle of the Karakoram, above the highway: a place in the sun, even if a bit cold in winterThree weeks of living in the village with a family are three weeks of fascination with the landscape, the people, their friendliness and respect for othersand three weeks of fun and joy, especially with the children. There is Rafia and Aliza, the two girls in the family. At 12 years, Rafia is the older, more serious, responsible one. She takes care of me and protects me wherever she can. I often feel like a little sister and nod at her instructions.Aliza is different. She is the opposite, always fun, laughing, aware of being a pretty girl, with her chic dresses and skirts. And she is brave, ambitious, persistent and always mischievous. She will become a teacher one day. I believe her every word, convinced that she will go far.A day in January begins quite unspectacularly. Everyone in the family has their job: Rafia helps prepare breakfast, Aliza tidies up the blankets, Ali the eldest has to get up early and walk 5km to school, while Nadir is only seven and a boy, so he can still be a child.I am here to capture life and the landscape in film and photos. That means I don't have a big goal. I let everything come my way and we'll see. At the end of the three weeks I gained many new friends, new experiences and a lot of respect for the people in the Hunza Valley, the people in the mountains of the Karakoram, who despite the harsh conditions are open to everything new, who receive foreigners like me with respect and a lot of warmth ,shaking my hands to say thank you for sharing life with them, even if only for a short time.I have a lot of pictures, more films, and some stories.”

“A great trip that I am very proud to have completed. The remoteness has a unique beauty all of its own. A very good level of fitness is required to enjoy this trek.We were helped by a great team of guides, cooks and general helpers. There dedication to helping us and looking after us was second to none. This trip is a challenge, but a very worthwhile one. You will not regret attempting it.The first look of K2 makes all the hardships of the trek worthwhile.”

“This was definitely one of the highlights of my trips abroad. Northern Pakistan is breathtaking and this travel specialist made it an incredible experience. Sultan made it easy in the beginning by answering all of my questions and providing documentation required for the Visa process. His brother Hassan was our driver to Fairy Meadows and Hunza Valley and honestly, I made sure not to nod off in the car because of so much beauty on the road. We had really great hotels to stay and if there were any issues, Sultan would be on top of it. He made great lenghts to make sure our tour group was doing fine. Really grateful too as I was not feeling well late one evening. Sultan's brother was able to drive me to a medical clinic to get medication. We also got to enjoy a meal and time with Sultan's lovely family. What I respect most about this agency is that they are culturally and environmentally responsible so you really feel like they care about their home. Experience of a lifetime!”

Pakistan - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

From a nature perspective, Pakistan looks like the spoiled brat of the subcontinent – blessed with scintillating natural beauty and a beautiful culture, but always troubled by its conflicts with India, political instability and terrorism. This is why the country is only visited by the most hardened travelers, a few lucky ones who actually get to see it for all its beauty.

Some of the best attractions in Pakistan make you look back into its rich and beautiful history towards ancient civilizations and jaw-dropping architectural feats. A few places you must see while in the country include the Shah Faisal Masjid, the most beautiful mosque in the country, the Lahore Fort and the ancient ruins of Mohenjo-daro and Taxila, both famous as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you’re incredibly lucky, you might also get to see the Khyber Pass, a pass that connects Pakistan to Afghanistan, famous for its astonishing beauty.

Tour Highlights

  • Go to Lahore to see grand architecture in Old Lahore and enjoy great shopping in New Lahore.
  • Don’t miss to visit the grand Lahore Fort, stunning Badshahi Mosque and majestic Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab.
  • Take a tour of Karachi and appreciate its British colonial and Indian architecture. Above all, visit the Mazar-a-Quaid tomb, the Mohata Palace and enjoy the sunset on Clifton Beach.
  • See the impressive Shah Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, a blend of traditional and modern architecture.
  • Visit the Khewra Salt Mines, the 2nd largest in the world. There, take a look at small-scale versions of the Great Wall of China, the Minar-e-Pakistan (Lahore) and some other landmarks.
  • Explore Lake Saif ul Malook, a tourist resort surrounded by mountains, which boasts great natural beauty.
  • Discover scenic Concordia, a heaven for mountaineers, on a hike. You will lay eyes on K-2, the world’s 2nd highest mountain there.

Travel Tips

  • Lake Saif ul Malook features wide differences between day-time (moderate) and night-time (under 0°C) temperatures, so prepare accordingly.
  • Refrain to eat in public during the month of Ramadan when most people fast.
  • Practice caution when you are around public gatherings.
  • Gunfire is a common way of celebrating major holidays and sport successes in Pakistan, so don’t be troubled, just be careful.
  • Always have cash with you since you may experience difficulties with credit card payments. ATMs are available in major cities.
  • English is spoken in Pakistan at varying levels of fluency.
  • Stick with bottled water for drinking since tap water may be unsafe.
