Gorgeous tiles, port wine and cork production are just some of the things Portugal is famous for. No matter what kind of holiday you’re looking for, you will love this lively country. Head to Lisbon to connect with its history and architecture, or take a cruise tour along the Azores to soak up that Iberian sunshine. Don’t miss the playful, multicoloured Sintra National Palace!

Portugal in January: Winter Weather, Travel Tips and More
Portugal in January: Winter Weather, Travel Tips and More
January might be the coldest month of the year in Portugal, but there is also a catch. Compared with the abysmal weather of northern European countries, Portugal in January is still a sunny respite. Of course, the Mediterranean’s wet winter phenomenon affects both the mainland and the islands. But if you dig deeper, you will find a few dry stretches. So, hug the sun-sprinkled southern shores of the Algarve or visit Sintra's Pena Palace minus all the maddening crowd. Catch some mammoth swells in Sagres atop your surfing board or ski down the slopes of Serra de Estrela. Make the best of the low season and create a memorable Portugal holiday experience on a soul-satisfying budget.

Portugal Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Portugal tours

Hard to pick a single favorite experience because there were so many great experiences. The food, the palaces and cathedrals were fantastic. So much history! Touring the wineries was a lot of fun as I had no experience with the wines we tried . It was fun to learn about Port and Rioja wines. The Douro Valley ( wine region ) was gorgeous. Staying at the winery hotel was an experience, the views of the terraced hills was amazing!

It was absolutely wonderful to be on this tour thru Spain and Portugal. I like Sevilla with its old town and cathedral, but I was mesmerized by Cordoba an old Mosque - Cathedral and 2000 years old Roman bridge we walked thru. I also loved Toledo that I visited 20 years ago, but it looked to me much better. Barcelona stole my heart - Sagrada Familia is build up and gorgeous. Spanish People are wonderful to be with - warm, funny and happy, the food is delicious - paella and the restaurants are great. Forgot about Valencia - old town and modern Art and Science Center built by Santiago Calatrava (Oculus in New York City is his as well) Portugal is a bit different and people more reserved. I was happy to be there and see Columbus' and Vasco De Gama's graves. Great tour, recommend to all.

I've worked in the adventure tourism industry for three decades and know a little bit about the industry. This itinerary was absolutely spot on and suited everyone in the group. Our guide was however the reason the trip was so fantastic. Joao Camara's was born in Funchal and his local knowledge regarding the islands geography, fauna, history etc was amazing. Having worked in tourism in other countries his professional, informative and amusing approach was brilliant. I will definitely be back in Madeira that's for sure

We had an excellent travel director in who did an amazing job of moving our full busload of 51 travelers around. We certainly saw the best of Portugal and the local travel guides were extremely knowledgeable providing a very educational trip as well. We chose to do all the optional activities which meant we were busy but we experienced so much more by doing so .

Well organised, thoughtfully managed, great days out walking and seeing all around the island. We had fantastic weather, could hike every day, and through our guide Joao, Madeiran born and proud of his home, learnt about the history, flora and fauna of Madeira. Everything from hotels, transport, daily itinerary, food and meals in the evening made the experience fun and memorable. I’ll be going back in the Spring when the wildflowers bloom. Very good value and an excellent hiking trip.

This trip gave us a wonderful journey through Portugal North and South, including so much history and culture. We enjoyed trying the different foods, our first funicular ride, centuries old various architectures and wineries and tasting their wines. The sunset river cruise was a highlight and Mass at Fatima topped off the trip for me.
